My gentle, loving cob mare has just received treatment after being hurt by one of two (or both) geldings that broke through the fence to her part of the field. Her chest has swollen right up, she has another swelling on her shoulder, covered in bite marks and can barely walk. She has a high temparature and an infection but the vet has said she should be o.k after a week or so on treatment. This has happened just as she is recovering from stomach problems so I do feel for her and she has had quite a hard life so she could have done without this.

Aaaah poor girl that's awful. Imagine how frightened she must have been when they were coming after her. I hope the fence will be much much improved.

I hope she hasn't fractured anything.

As someone who's horse ALWAYS got beaten up, you have my upmost sympathies

Its absolutly awful when your horse gets bullied because theres a complete feeling of helplessness

How would I stand legally do you think about paying the bill? The two geldings belong to two different people at the livery yard. Probably not a chance I expect.

Yes, the vet said that she's in shock too. I managed to get her out of the field this morning but she walked down to the yard with her head practically on the ground and very lame.

It's the livery yard owner you should be chasing - he's responsible for the fencing...

Mmm i went through this sort of last year. Scenario was my gelding was in a stable right next to another. They had half walls and bars seperating the top part of the stable. My gelding was licking along his wall (as he always does after his dinner). A new schooling livery was put into the stable next door and it bit my horse through the bars. (Grabbed hold of his tongue and wouldnt let go. Mine pulled back with enough force to tear away all the muscles that attach the tongue to the pallette of his mouth).

He needed 30 stitches in his mouth, had a hole the full way through, had nothing attaching his tongue to the bottom of his mouth, almost had to go and have micro-surgery and, at the time, there was a lot of questions over his ridden future.

Basically we were told that we couldnt claim against another livery owner; we'd have to claim negligence against the livery yard. I *think* the yard owners saught legal advice and found out they werent in great standing as they got very defensive and panicy rather quickly.

As it happened, we never wanted to claim against them at all as the owner was my trainer.... but i would have liked some compensation from the other owner as the vet bill was huge.

Anyway, I was told that unless the owner offered to pay out of "the goodness of their heart" (so to speak), then the only course of action we could take was to persue the yard owners for negligence.

Sorry to hear about that Tierra, that sounded very nasty. Thanks for your input everyone. It just seems mad that I should have to pay out for the bill due to fencing problems. Still, the main thing is she should be o.k, so fingers crossed.

Thats such a shame, I do feel for you. My connemara mare received the same treatment when a stupid livery chose to put her in the sand school with her thug of a gelding 'for company' - when I arrived she was literally covered in bites and the owner was stood in the school looking useless
