I've had my pony for 21 years and I've hardly had any trouble with her at all in all of those years. She is 25 now and had to have three very loose teeth taken out on Monday, so since then she's been having anti bi's and small amounts of bute to keep her comfortable.
She's come in today very lame. Now she has an old check ligament injury that slows her down if she's done a bit much, but that is a front leg and this is her hind. There is no mark, heat or swelling, just a small amount of puffiness above her fetlock.
She can't be box rested as she is a dreadful box walker, so I've turned her back out and I'm going to keep a close eye on her.

I've spoken to my vet who says just to keep her comfortable for a few days on the bute and see how she goes. I decided a while ago that should anything happen, tendon, ligament etc etc that I wouldn't pay out to scan her etc and as long as she was happy to mooch around in walk then I was happy. However she's noticeably lame in walk and is resting it a lot of the time. She does seem happy in herself though.

I'm just so worried about her, if it is tendon or anything similar and she's not happy I'm not left with an awful lot of options.

poor you and poor pony (hugs) i think you need to consider your options carefully and wisely -prepare yourself for any big decision that may have to be made. but just see how things go for the next few days and see what happens xxx

Sounds like a lucky pony to have had one, loving home for so long - it is not every horse that can lay claim to that. Fingers crossed that this turns out to be nothing too serious.

Thanks hellspells, they are appreciated by both of us.

alicep, I made my decision's about various things quite a while ago because I knew that if and when it come to it I'd always look for another way. I hope we've not got there yet.

Flicker, thank you, that made me cry. She's been the best pony anyone could wish for, I retired her very early as I was fed up with her lovely nature being abused by children. She's had a good life and I hope she will continue to have a good few years yet.

Don't fear the worse yet...it's only today she's come in lame!! Sometimes these things go as quickly as they come and yes, she's old so it could be serious but it might not be.
If there's no improvement in a few weeks OK, then start asking the big questions but don't give up on her yet!!!

mac1999, no I know and she'll be given time, but equally I won't put her through unnecessary pain. She means the world to me.

Completely agree with Flicker. I bet she is a credit to you too. Hugs to you. I bet if the weather wasn't so grim you wouldn't feel as bad. Give her time, I am sure she will be fine. x

There was a farrier at the yard and he had a prod and dig around and said he would be very surprised if it was anything in the foot. He's old school and knows his stuff, until then that what I was thinking.

Thanks everyone, and you are probably right about the weather, I've been ill too so it's all just got a bit much.

Hopefully I'll be able to update with some good news in a few days

Prob no help, but my old mare did a tendon in her back leg out hacking when she was 29. She just had a bit of a slip. She won't box rest either & I kept her in a corner of the field with both back legs bandaged. To cut a long story short, she's now 35 & perfectly sound in walk. She has adapted her gait in trot, canter & gallop (!) as her leg healed a bit stiff so she can't put her heel down properly. However she still likes hacking out & running off with people. Don't despair yet.

She'll be OK - it's amazing how they cope. My old pony came back from a loan home aged 18 seriously lame behind. I retired her but she had none of it. Had a slight limp but wanted to be back in work & went on Sj/XC/hacking til she was 27!

I have a golden pony too, so know exactly where you are coming from. Sounds like abscess trouble to me - possibly in her heel, even! Hope she is sorted and feeling her old self very soon
