Hi guys,
My beautiful old lady Ella has just been diagnosed with an ulcer inside her eye which my 1st vet missed 2 weeks ago!! It has now gone so bad that the new vet that he may have to remove her eye next week. I'm totally devastated and angry that the 1st vet missed it. It is 5 ml across and has gone right through to the back if her eye :( she is very down and isn't eating properly or drinking. Has anyone ever known a horse at 27 years old to have there eye removed and pulled threw it ok??

Ouch! Poor girl.

Eye removal is done under standing sedation so she should be fine, much safer than general anaesthetic. Chances are she can't see out of it now so should adapt well and it will be far less painful eventually. You just have to think about how you approach her, lead her, that she is turned out somewhere known to her and either on her own or better yet with a friendly quiet companion.

Best of luck to you both x

i work at a vets and last weekend there was a horse in for a cataract removal and im sure they said it was 26! i also know of a horse who was 23 when her eye was removed! she coped perfectly fine, alothough you had to be careful when doing things on that side of her.
it took some getting use to seeing her like that though......it looked like she was constantly sleeping!

Hi
When the vet came out to her yesterday and said that its very bad, that she's going to lose her eye. I'd already had a vet out 2 weeks ago for it and was told there was nothing wrong with it!! Made me feel like I was an over protective parent!!! Anyhow he injected anti biotics straight into her eye under sedation he has given me a load of drugs to give her, I'm praying that she's going to be ok.

Xxxx

My 36 yr old gelding had his eye out 4 weeks ago and is fine. He is a bit spooky on his blind side but otherwise he is great. No infections or anything. He was prone to ulcers, reoccurring uveitis and had a cataract. He was not responding to any treatment so i had to have his eye removed. Another horse on the yard had his eye removed weeks earlier and is fine.

I do hope your Ella is ok.

I know personally of 2 horses which have lost an eye, although admittedly younger than yours and both do very well with only one. PM Janette on here, she shows her one eyed horse successfully.

Hi spotty dotty pony
Wow that's fantastic oh I hope she's going to be as strong as them horses!! She is very spooky at the min, she threw me off a couple of weeks ago now I know why:( she's in agony bless her. I'm going to ask the farmer who owns our yard if I can have a field to myself for Ella and her daughter daisy who I own. We can only ask hope he understands and says yes there is a few big mares on there what bully Ella in the fields

Just wanted to say hope it's not too unpleasant for you and Ella. I've recently photographed two horses in their 20's who have lost an eye and both coped fantastically well.

I'm sure if she does have to have it removed you will be pleasantly surprised by how it's not as bad as you fear.

Sending big hugs and positive thoughts for you. Keep us posted with how she's doing please.

I know of a horse who had it's eye removed at an older age (sure it was in it's twenties) and she did absolutely fine, made a full recovery, and lived for years after until old age got the better of her. She coped just fine with the loss of her eye.:)
