My three horses have just come in as the rain although not overly heavy is pretty relentless and they were stood looking gloomy at the gate.
I unrugged them and the first 2 obviously wet neck, heads etc were bone dry and warm underneath their Weatherbeeta and rambo turn outs, then i come to no 3 who has a PE 70g as he's not clipped and quite a stocky little lad but i was horrified to pull it off and find he's absolutely soaked- I mean literally i had to sweat scrape him off and put a cooler on- its not even visable he had a rug on at all other than a dry line round his neck!

I'm really shocked- its one of my more expensive purchases (the other 2 are second hand ebay buys)
Its not been reproofed but tbh i only got it at the very end of last winter so its not had a huge amount of use really.
Back to the old weatherbeeta which isnt as good a fit but at least keeps him dry!

I am stunned!

Annoying isn't it!! I bought a lovely second hand Weatherbeeta off eBayer. The seller had kindly washed it.... with normal washing powder in the machine I presume as it smelt freshly laundered. Despite reproofing with Nikwax the water still goes straight through. I never wash my rugs other than hosing off the worst mud and leaving them to dry and they are always fine. Not sure reproofing really works

Now I'm REALLY depressed as I've just bought one, PI hasn't even had it on yet.

I wonder if your rug is the 600D version?

Frankly I don't know why anyone sells 600D rugs as they are only showerproof rather than waterproof so tend to leak in heavy rain!

I'm pretty sure that the 70x i've just bought is a 1000d , but you're right the 6ood is a waste of space for serious rain , although i was pretty shocked on Tues , PI had a buccas power turnout lite 1680d on and was soaked with sweat - it's the wicking type turnout that you can put on if they are wet , well he must have got a bit hot although it is only a lite but it was obviously trying to wick but was so saturated on the outside that it all just failed completely , i can't see how a rug CAN work if it's trying to let liquid through from the inside whilst stopping liquid from the outside.?

Paddy Irish no idea how they Bucas rugs work but they do. Yours did exactly what it said on the tin and wicked the sweat away from your horse. They stay waterproof too. The reason I know this is because I've got one of them.

OP I had a PE rug some years ago and it leaked like a sieve. Their customer service left an awful lot to be desired and I won't touch them with a bargepole. Although of course the management team may have changed and they might be a lot better now. Just I work on the once bitten twice shy rule!

I have the PE unlined Buster T/O and it is frankly useless in rain - v disappointed in it - only use it on top of a stable rug if we get frozen in and horse is turned out in the indoor for a leg stretch so his stable rug doesn't get covered in sand if he rolls.
My 70X seems (so far) to be OK though.
I haven't bothered with the big Winter PE rugs for the reasons that I had one leaky one (and Customer service didn't believe me, either!) and the necks aren't wide enough for my Show cob, and also are weirdly too long!

this ^^ sent mine back - they exchanged for the 40g

Reproofing does work if its done properly:) I have a rug cleaning business and all rugs are reproofing are dried in a drying room which bonds the resins to the fabric.

DIY reproofing however it is done maybe a bit more hit and miss:)

Frustrating though isn't it. I bought a good product and followed the instructions to the letter......

I have a 600d amigo that my gelding is currently out in 24/7 and he's been out on a very open hill in nearly torrential rain and stayed toasty warm and dry!

I would deffinitely expect more from premier equine rugs, from what ive heard they're supposed to be fab!

Drop them an email or give them a ring and let them know, they might exchange it.

Ive got 2 rambo wugs that ive had for 15 + yrs, theyve been washed and reproofed loads of times and never let me down yet, my horses are always bone dry even in our wet cold scottish winters

It's probably more to do with the fact that it wasn't washed with the correct product.

I wash and reproof mine successfully. I don't know what you have bought or how you have used it, but nikwax can be applied different ways, I always dilute with warm water and use a hand sprayer, with the rug over a fence/wall, and re warm in the microwave if it cools before I finish.

concentrate on any seams or darts. one application is usually enough but as yours sounds like they used detergent, let it air dry and then give it another go.

Domestic wash powder is not designed for horse rugs and basically strips them of their waterproof qualities.

My own Amigo 600d has been washed and re-proofed for 3 years now and its kept out the heaviest of rain. When a rug doesnt "crisp" up anymore and the material goes soft feeling then it has come to the end of its waterproof life. Nikwax is the best product around in my experience and I have a Rug Cleaning business.

It would seem that the Premier Equine rugs arent what they used to be according to what I read on here, have to say I dont get that many to clean! Rambos are excellent rugs...

Another vote for the Amigo 600d in light and medium, she lives out in the most torrential rain and has always been dry to date. Rugs been washed and reproofed professionally and no leak in 2 years!

Izzwizz - which Nikwax product do you use? I've just used Nikwax TX spray on my l/w t/o and it's worked fairly well (beading on most of the rug) but pony came in with a wet bum today. Should I re-apply more spray or is there a better Nikwax product?

ive heard of others having similar probs, i believe there is a prob with some of 70g rugs but could be wrong. Def worth complaining to PE.

i dont think lighter weight rugs are any good, they are really only shower proof.

i never wash my turnouts, they are never waterproof afterwars and reproofer is a complete waste of money

I've used their trio when my tb was living out in winter so it had torrential rain and snow and I never had a single problem with it so maybe it is something to do with their lighter rugs...

I use Nikwax Rugwash and Nikwax Re-proofer specifically designed for horse rugs. I know that people use tent proofer etc, but the only concern I would have would be if it reacted in any way with the horses skin. Give Nikwax a ring for advice, they are very helpful 01892 786410. The staff are very helpful and friendly and Im sure they will be able to advise you further.

The TX spray is meant for human waterproofs so there shouldn't be a problem with pony reacting to it.

I do customers coats with the wash in re-proofer you mention, it may well be that its just not quite tough enough for horse rugs, hence the wet bum. Have to say the horse rug re-proofer is a thicker solution than the coat re-proofer.

Right - I'll hunt out some rug proofer then. I had assumed it was the same stuff in a different bottle so they could charge more!
Shame - OH can get the TX stuff cheap through work but I suspect he can't get the rug proofer.

You should be able to get it from a Saddlery, the one I do rugs for sells it. As said before, ring Nikwax to see what they suggest, they may have ideas I dont know about.!

Good luck with it!!

No experience of PE's rugs but just to go against the flow, my Amigo 600D leaks like a sieve. Actually a sieve would be more waterproof, it soaks up rain and ensures the horse remains soaked...needless to say I don't use it any more...
