My puppy is doing my head in!!!!!

Every morning my mum gets up about 5am and lets the puppy out of his cage. She then leaves home about 6am and leaves him in the front room with the TV and fire on until i get up at 7am so he is only on his own for an hour and he usually falls asleep on the sofa.

Well for the past week he has done nothing but bark constantly when my mum leaves, no-one else in the house wakes up apart from me and he is not even my dog!!! I have been trying to leave him as long as poss but it is so bad i am worried he will wake up the neighbours who have young children.

Luckily this morning he barked for half an hour and then fell asleep again.

He is seriously doing my head in and i am getting so moody at work where he keeps waking me up but i dont want to give in to his attention seeking.

Its not just the mornings either, he barks at everything!!! If our other dog has a toy he barks, if the cat is eating her food he barks, he barks out in the garden for no reason, he barks if our little dog is at the top of the stairs and he is at the bottom (even though he can get up them). He just likes the sound of his own voice.

My mum is looking into dog obedience with him and also thinking about getting one of those collars that squirt water everytime he barks but in the meantime i think i am gonna pull out all my hair!!!

ive heard the collars can be a bit hit and miss in going off, although if your timing is ok im told the remote control ones work. he could be taught to bark on command, then apparently they can be to to stop too lol

Dont buy a collar you waste your money. All you need is an empty washing up liquid bottle with water in. When puppy barks squirt immediately with water. Took my dog to training and this is the best and cheapest thing they taught him. Now if I pick up the bottle and look at him he stops barking - no need to squeeze!

Daughter bought two of these colllars and also sent her dogs away for anti bad behaviour and barking. Wasted loads of money and now gone to training and got bottle and wished she had known sooner!!!

I suggested to my mum a squirty bottle but she said that he likes water and tries to attack it LOL. Stops him barking though i spose.

Only problem is as someone else says, when he is on his own how are we meant to tackle it then?

He has toys and has access in and out of the garden at all times but he still continues to do it.

Mum has emailed about training but they haven't got back to her yet and they are the only ones local to us which is annoying.
 
just a thought but have you's tryed putting him back in his crate after his pee, untill everyones up, he may feel safe in it, if its an anxiety thing.
 
Yeah we used to put him back in the crate and he was just as bad. Thats why we started leaving him out and it stopped for ages but has started again.

Sooty - We leave the TV just so that there is a bit of noise in the room so he doesn't feel so alone if you know what i mean. We also leave the fire on as he likes to fall asleep beside it. Just little things to try and comfort him really.
 
How about buying a few rubber kong toys, fill them with treats, bit of cheese, meat past and then freeze them. In the morning before your mum leaves get her to hide them in the front room in places he will look and that should keep him quiet for at least an hour
 
What a brilliant idea bosworth! The frozen meat I mean. I was going to suggest the same thing but with marmite on toast! You'd have to have a choice of hiding places too, to keep him interested.
There is also an anti-bark 'thing' you can buy (look on ebay) which you plug in and it emits an ultrasonic sound which deters dogs from barking. Not as much fun as water but you don't need to be in the room.
Don't tell anyone but you can use it for your neighbours dogs too, if they bark!!
 
YOU NEED TO PLACE HIM BACK IN THE CAGE, YOUR MOTHER IS GETTING HM INTO A BAD ROUTINE, TRY PLACING A BLANKET OVER THE CAGE, SO HE THINKS ITS STILL NIGHT TIME!!!
i am suprised he dosnt wake u up on a weekend at this time to cos he sees it as his normal routine, its best to let them out a different times otherwise he will become acustomed to wanting to be out at this time everyday.
MAYBE YOU SHOULD TRY PUTTING HIS CAGE IN AN AREA YOUR MOTHER CAN NOT DISTURB HIM WHEN SHE GETS UP, SO HE CAN BE LET OUT A LITTLE LATER!!!
water is a good deterant for barking, u could add a little lemon juice for a bitter suprise!!! THIS NEEDS TO BE DONE AT THE EXACT TIME HE BARKS OR CARRIES OUT THE BAD BEHAVIOUR, ITS NEEDS TO BE INSTANT AND WITH A COMMAND I.E QUIET IN A HARSH RAISED VOICE.
 
Agree with Mick. He should be let out for a pee when your mam gets up then put back in his cage as if your going to bed again.Water is a good deterrent or put some stones in metal tin sit outside of door and when he barks rattle tin loudly and shout QUIET in a strong tone.Repeat this as much as neccessary.You should not pander to his attention seeking he needs to learn that he gets up when the rest of the house does.Its just perserverance with puppies,I would also maybe have the other dog in the same room as him so he doesnt feel left alone.
