Washing machine been dead for a week, I knew what was wrong, pump clogged up but couldn't undo the plug/lid thingy despite various ploys (including bashing it with a hammer) Engineer came undid plug, and lo and behold removed a disgusting mess of dog hair, horse hair and hay ! That cost me £45.

Not as expensive as a new machine! Hopefully you can now undo the plug yourself in future. Cause the hair will carry on accumulating.

I am another lucky one with an OH who will not call in an engineer, will go to great lengths to do it himself.

my OH will do it but he has usually blocked it up with dog hair ! but then he washed my pony's numnah with the kids clothes the other day. they all came out clean if slightly hairy.

Not as bad as the shame a friend suffered. For years her machines have been dying and she has been replacing them. A few months ago her machine died and her new OH insisted she got an engineer out. To her amazement he undid a flap at the bottom and pulled out a plug with a load of assorted hair. Following discussions it seems that in the past 30 years she's replaced over a dozen machines that probably just needed the filter cleaned :D

As I have 5 horses, I bring the smaller stable rugs and fleeces home to wash when I can to avoid adding to my already gargantuan tack shop bills. I managed to completely defeat my (very expensive although still going strong after 17 years Miele!) washer at one point by not cleaning the filter out, but the bigger problem I have is that during the short time in the kitchen before the rug gets shoved in the washer, and afterwards when it's drying in the conservatory (even after a pre-wash and 60 or 70 degree 2 washes!) my OH goes absolutely potty about the "horse wee" aroma which somewhat permeates the house! I can't smell it very much, maybe I'm inured to it (!) The 18 month old seems to be particularly skilled at producing dirty stable rugs that are unbelievably smelly :-o

Not quite the same but many years ago my OH's mum thought it would be nice to wash my mares stable rug for me.......................... she then complained she had hairy knickers :D

Funniest is getting white hairs all over OHs grunders ;);)

At least then you can give 'em a shake. My OH used to complain bitterly about itchy undies - never dared tell him it was cos of washing his (black) knickers and socks after doing Jasper's purple numnah, fleece and/or bandages (Jasper was alo black!!)

Alma, if it's any consolation, my very elderly and devout Catholic mother's upstairs loo got completely blocked. The plumber who put matters right came downstairs in triumph bearing the culprits - a biro and a fountain pen, securely bound together with a rosary!

but then surely the hairs etc are still stuck to whatever you've put in the bag ? Fleece are the worst culprits (or should that be fleeces )

LOL!! I had exact same problem over Xmas!! The washing machine would complete the cycle then cut out. Only way I could get clothes out was to restart it and wait again for cycle to finish. It went on and on. One morning it was 4 hours before I got door open!! Thought we should try filter before buying new one. I would usually do filter every few weeks but had operation in Nov and was out of action for a month then over Xmas I forgot. OH unscrewed filter and I have never seen so much dog and horse hair!!! Machine is fine now!!

My OH has zero tolerance for pet and horse hair on his work clothes
It caused a lot do domestic bother so I bought a second top loading washer , harmony restored .
