I'm a bit annoyed today as my suspicions about my side saddle being too narrow have been confirmed!

I started suspecting it the other day when I got back off of holiday and noticed that it had been perching a little higher than usual at the front so I took photos and posted them on one of my SS groups that I belong too where they said it looked a bit narrow too.

Anyways, was riding in the field today and practicing cantering and did two jumps and had to get off as the saddle started to roll as it was perching.

Thank goodness Sen has high withers which stopped the saddle sliding completely to the left!

I can't afford to buy another but need one as this one is unrideable for me now due to all the weight and condition Sen has put on (she gained 10 kilos while I was away on holiday!).
Looks like I'm going to have to bite the bullet though and sell this one and buy another. Trouble is, the good ones are so darn hard to find and those cardboard leather imports you see on Ebay for cheap, are death traps.

If anyone knows of anything going 17" seat, medium fit, please PM me as I don't really want to go the Ebay route (first side saddle I bought from there had a broken tree!) and don't want to have too long of a break without riding aside!

I'm just so annoyed though as we both were coming along too and now this!

there's a lady who sells and leases sidesaddles. Would leasing be an option? then you can always change it if need be?

I can try and get you the details if need be?

have you spoken to Barry Swain in Walsall at Lichfield Side saddles, he may be able to adjust your side saddle, I used him to completely refurbish one which I had found in a skip and it was fantastic, and refitted to my ID beautifully

JadeWisc, yup- there is a market as new custom made ones are rediculously expensive and everyone wants the old makers as they were so well made (which is why they are still being used today).

Charlie, yes please! If you could try and get me the details of that lady who sells and leases them, that would be FANTASTIC! I emailed the SSA today but I'm still waiting for them to get back to me too. Leasing would be fine as Sen's my loan.

bosworth, wow a skip! Wish I could find sidesaddles in skips!

I will look into Barry Swain as well but I don't think the stuffing is the problem (I had it flocked in May), I think it's time I move up a size tree wise but I'll see what he says. Walsall isn't that far from Leicestershire.

sidesaddle girl - does that mean you'll be selling yours???? PM me if you do - I have a particulary narrow/med ISH who I'd love to break to sidesaddle x

Liz Turner from Cornwall lent me one for a year at £150 a year. It was about 8 years ago. She had a trailer load of side saddles - all sort of widths. If you want Barries number Pm me and I will let you have it.

I couldn't believe I found one in the skip and the tree was fine - It was about 150 years old, The leather was rotted in places but the serge underside was in good condition as was the flocking, it had the stirrup bar and the removable leaping head. Barry completely rebuilt it for me, retaining everything he could and replacing everything else. It cost me a total of £350 to have it done - fantastic

Can thoroughly recommend Liz Turner and the leasing route, I think in the long run it worked out more economical than comitting to buy a saddle that could be wrong in 6 months. She does travel and comes up to The Midlands quite often.
