My silly sausage horse!! Also aprrox vet bill??

Badger has hurt himself again!! My fault really, but he’s also a silly billy!! Was tied up outside his stable while I was mucking out, he was having a little scrap with Danny next door and donked his head on the overhang bit and cut a big deep gouge above his eye!! Bet it really hurt and bled a lot!! Anyway he’s all stitched up now and seems ok, so hopefully we won’t have any problems.

Onto vets bill, just so I can prepare myself!! he had:

Out of hours call out
Sedation
Local anaesthetic
4 Stitches
Antibiotics
Anti-inflammatories
Bute
Will also need stitches out in 10-14 days

How much do you reckon all that is gonna cost?

Well, going by my vets charges for visits, which I think are reasonable for here:

OOH visit - £60.00

Not sure how much the Sedation, Local anaesthetic, 4 Stitches, Antibiotics, Anti-inflammatories, Bute, but lets say another £60.00 (could be more, Im not sure).

Then visit to take the stitches out, pre-booked visit £30.00

Plus VAT of 20%

I think you are looking at around £180 - £200 MINIMUM I'm afraid, but it depends on the costs for the anaesthetic etc. If I had my bill on me, I could give you a more realistic pricing for these, but left it at home (huge bill just arrived for recent accident he had).

Ouch poor boy!

I am going to say more.

OOH call out - 80-100.
Then the time took by the vet so £50 or so

Sedation is going to be about 40, suture material about £5.00, possibly some lignocaine again £5.00. Antibiotics £6.00, anitinflams about the same.

And then a call out again to remove. do you not know anyone able to take them out for you?

So I think you are looking at £250 plus.

Thanks people. I was thinking somewhere in the 200 to 300 mark.. boooo!!! Shame they don’t have NHS for horses!

My mum might be happy to take the stitches out.

mine had similar in nov - but ran into a tree  (don't ask lol!) and nearly de-gloved her ear

luckily vet was due out that day anyway as she was due for sedation for clipping :D
soo....
pre-arranged appointment
sedation x 2.5 (again don't ask - she fights sedation to the very end )
cleaning & staples
anti inflamatory
antibiotics

then prescribed
antibiotics
danalon

then followup:
prearranged visit
sedation x 1.5 (she was being good that day lol)
take staples out

total bill..........
£325 :( the extra sedation she needs bumped the bill up a lot

Gawd 325??!! That’s a lot!! Think he only needed a normal amount of sedation. Was a bit scary I thought he was going to fall over!!

she's v head shy at best of times and HATES clippers - i can't clip her head/ears with normal sedation dose (1.5x is normal for her )
he did 1.5 times - turned trimmers on to trim hair round the cut and she reared up and buggered off  so he did another full dose and stuck cotton wool in her ears
she still protested
so she had to have twitch too
poor girly :(

taking staples out she needed less as we didn't use trimmers then

Last cut we had that required a vet came to £1800. :(

That said it was multiple visits to check, redress, and various others, which I won't go into.

Glad he's on the mend :) I would say £250 ish too :o

Well it sounds cheap from what my dog Ben has cost me past few months. 3 teeth removed and bone chips (kicked by my youngster, he did chase him) £424 .51, last week snaffled a tub of butter ate 2/3 and got pancearitits £339.58,he also suffers from epilepsy,so monthly bill for £100 roughtly, blood test £66 every 3 months and the odd cut where he's gone through barbwire, hawthorn hedges and he's only two, bills always roughly £100 and my OH doesn't believe in insurance. ARRRGGHH!!!!!

Not sure on the vet bill but can look at one of mine from last year when mine done the same, only difference being he did not need to be sedated.
Also why not take the stitches out yourslef, i asked the vet if i could do it myself, and they were happy to let me as i have taken stitches out before saves on another call out fee and and charge for service

If you use the same vets as me (which is quite possible as you're not that far from me) then the OOH callout is £80. From that I would guess around the £200 mark.

The stitches will be easy enough to take out yourself I would imagine. When my mare cut her face and needed stitches I just snipped the thread with some scissors and pulled the thread out.

When L ripped her lower eyelid off, she had almost exactly the same treatment at Badger has had, just with a few more stitches!!

My bill was about £130 :D

You may be surprised....
