Whereas we are in deep love for sj on a surface!!!

His dream going is to jump out of a sloppy mud soup :p
Surfaces are a bit of a mixed bag for us - he's absolutely fine at Kelsall on their unwaxed surfaces, but Somerford is entirely pointless and not even worth trying to jump on. Bicton is a long way to go to discover what he thinks about it!

Pretty slim chance - will be 10 days before staples come out and he can do anything 🤷‍♀️ fortunately new BE rules do mean I'll get a refund on a vet cert, and maybe there's something later in October we can reschedule to?!
I'm really sorry, I was overly optimisic. Great you can get a refund, and I really hope he heals well and you can find something else for him in Oct, even if Bicton doesnt suit him.

vets were not entirely on the 'you'll definitely not manage to get there POV' - i'm just tempering my expectations. It's a minimum length track and fairly flat, so not the biggest fitness test. But it's only going to happen if it heals exactly to schedule and we're still able to get to the gallops on Sunday 24th...

then, having had a look through the calendar, I think our only decent stretch goals would be 2*L or 3*S at Bicton - so we'd have to lump it with jumping on a surface. Or another intermediate run at Oasby - but tbh that's probably not the most educational track for him now so maybe just wasting a run on his legs for the sake of it.

Or just call it a day on a season where we've had a really solid set of runs - all positive experiences - albeit just full of annoying cancellations!

But the main thing is getting him back good and comfortable again and then working out what we do :)

Totally understand, one day at a time, get him through this sound and happy then make a plan. Everything crossed for a speedy, uneventful healing process.

Sorry to hear of his cut. ☹️ I too really enjoyed reading your report and can’t believe the size of those XC fences. I was looking forward to hearing about your training up to the next one but will just keep fingers crossed for a speedy recovery

Well... cut appears to be healing nicely from the outside, but he looks lamer than he should on trot up, so it's off for x-rays we go tomorrow. Fingers crossed it's just bone bruising...
What a shame after such a great competition - I really enjoyed reading your report. I hope all goes well with the x-rays tomorrow! 🤞

...and as predicted, we're definitely not going. Vet suggesting to err on the side of caution and leave staples in over the weekend - so we just won't be able to do the work needed to get there. Gutting given the low entries - it was something we really wanted to support.

So the next decision day is the next vet visit on Monday - do we call it a day on the season (which has had a huge achievement in it already in that he is now most officially an "intermediate horse"!) or do we make a new plan to go to Bicton 3 weeks later than Osberton and attempt the madness of running at 3* (madness) or instead running more at a comfort zone in the 2*L? There's no real "need" for him to do a 2L for any MERs, so that's also part of the decision factor...

Ok I do not ride at anywhere near this level, and I am sure you have access to much more knowledgable advice. But you asked..... So my tuppence worth which you are more than welcome to ignore!

I read your first post again. As far as I can work out, you have now had 3 runs at intermediate. 2 pretty easy for the level, and then a stiffer test. The last one was great in the sense that he was genuine and bold. But was also not straightforward in that there were some tricky questions and you did not always ride the best lines etc. Ie there is plenty more to learn at that level! But it did the job to get you ready for Osberton, with a plan for more training in the meantime, to get him ftter and get you both more tuned up to think at the speed you need to think at for these very challenging questions.

But then you have had an injury layoff so a) he has not done the prep you wanted and b) he and you have both had a break since the last event which may affect form and confidence of both or either of you.

From that position, I think steppeing up again this season is unncessarily risky. Consolidating the season with a great confidence giving run at 2* is the better option in my view. With exciting plans for next year.

But good luck with whatever you decide. And what a season you have had!!

I have just realised that post was probably asking rhetorical questions, not actually wanting input! So yeah, just let us know what you are planning as I am enjoying the ride vicariously!

Haha, well having discussed options we've decided that 2L is definitely not feeling "worth it" for such a big drive and expense, although we might just have a quick ON spin around Askham Bryan since it's nearby and might just have a purpose in that we could have a shot at qualifying for his Gatcombe class again for next year. Particularly as he might get his beloved mud to run on.

Well that would also tick the 'consolidating with a confidence giving run' box. With less hassle and cost.
But equally, our last hairbrained plan to go to Bicton and run in a 2* off minimal novice MERs ended up going pretty well. Nonetheless I think I'm probably inclined to just try and have an Askham run and focus on training for next year instead. It's just been such a gutting year of missed runs - we missed out on Thoresby, Rockingham and Gatcombe because of the rain. And now Osberton because of a stupid field thing!

Well, we finally got those staples out, but the wound hasn't dried and closed up as 'on schedule' as we wanted - so we're now in handwalking limbo! Hoping that we can still come back into some light work this weekend, but I think that puts all eventing plans on ice until next year.

Super annoying that I've just seen the photos for the Osberton Intermediate 3 day posted online this morning and the course looks PERFECT for where we were at. Never mind!!

Fingers crossed for a 2024 eventing season with less weather and wound related interruptions...
