My stallion has just covered my mare!! HELP

Do mares sometimes still ovulate at this time of year? I guess it is highly unlikely.

My mares escaped from their field and got in with my stallion today (looked like one of them leaned over the fence and broke it). When I got there he was covering one of my mares, I didn't see if he did the job properly but goodness knows how long they were at it for. She was raging in season and seemed to have fluids around her quaters and in the top of her tail (I hope these were hers!).

What is the likelyhood that she could ovulate this late in the year?
 
There is a chance as I was speaking to some people that had some foal's born at their yard just last month...which would equate to a December covering...... Speak to your vets and they can give her some drugs to flush her out just in case....
 
I wanted to put her in foal but next year! Also a November foal is not the ideal obviously. I suppose it is a long shot but better safe than sorry. Although she does seem to 'force' herself in to season sometimes. Sl*t.

I do know a few mares that tend to come into season all year round but I'm not sure how fertile they are in their 'off peak' months! If a foal isn't on the adjenda for this mare at the mo I would get the vet to jab her - there are hormone jabs they can be given that prevent foalies when accidents happen.
 
Bet your stallion thought Christmas had come early this year - sorry, couldn't resist that one!

She could ovulate still.

Get your vet to give her prostaglandin within the next couple of weeks and she should abort it (I think they say it's 98% effective). She might sweat up or look a bit colicy, but it should abort any unwanted pregnancy. It would be good insurance to PG her regardless!

Bearing in mind that a normal equine gestation lasts 320-370 days, Rema's mare could have been covered from as early as 27th December, or as late as 15th Feb... assuming the pregnancy ran for a "normal" length...

Seems odd that a mare could be bred in 2006 and not foal until 2008, but it can happen

Our stallion escaped one year and covered a livery's mare in late November..

She was very good about it and allowed us to get the vet to give her an injection which made her sweat a lot but not get in foal.
I would get your vet to do this to ensure you don't get a November foal.
 
One of my Cb mares was born late August after her sire jumped several fences and covered her dam in September - she has all her mother's genes and managed to get in with a young colt when only three years old.

The embarassed stud owner paid for vet to inject her - equine equivalent of morning after pill!!

This mare stays in season all winter and my other older CB who previously had silent seasons is in season right now.

Our young stallion who arrived a month ago has been TOLD no sex in December. Poor boy.
