Well, I have seen it today and its hideous. They have handpainted it with frog green gloss paint, so thickly that it go a skin on some of it and the rest is ripply and peels off. It doesn't have and visable damage.
I have been told that it will be written off by the insurance so I am pretty gutted, but now I have seen it I don't think of it as the same vehicle that I loved so much.
They left the CD player and side steps I hasd in the back to fit, also the electric cable for my trailer, but have taken the dog guard and new waterproof seatcovers.
Here are some pics, if anyone has seen this vehicle in the Thames ~Valley area in the last 2 weeks (sporting a big number 88)? in the rear window, please let me or the police know. It has coverd approx 250 miles in the last 2 weeks.

Although it looks in good nick for age I suspect the £££cost of a strip paint and respray (you have to remove the gloss to paint it properly) would be far far greater than the value

What a shame. But i agree, it likely could be restored or taken up by someone who really likes green (Hibs Fans?). But I reckon for the OP/owner, tis better to have it written off so she's not got to live with it. I wouldn't want it back either.
 
It is sad as it is/was a really genuine/straight landy that just kept going and had just passed its MOT with gold stars.
I think the paint would peel off with a lot of tedious work and a few hot jetwashes and with a polish the original paintwork could be ok, but if it has been banger racing (not that it ever went very fast) I wonder whats happened underneath/enginewise. Plus knowing the scumbags have been in it.
Think I will see what the insurance say, they are going to collect it and bring it to a local garage for a laugh/assessment.
I think even if you did like green you would be a bit bonkers to drive round in a vehicle this colour!!
 
Don't let them take it! It is being written off because it wouldn't be economic for them to repair. However, you can, or you can sell it to someone who will.
My old car was written off in an accident, but I insisted that I wanted to keep it for spares. It was valued on my drive at £800, and before I had the cheque my OH (car mechanic) had it back on the road for me.
You don't need to buy it back, they might take a token amount off the valuation, but it's old and they might not do that. They didn't with my car.
 
I have to let the insurance recover it as I can't get it back from the Police pound without a trailer/recovery truck as its 75 miles away, the ignition is ripped out, it has no number plates and it a flat tyre which doesn't seem much to mend but I would also have to drive it down the M4 looking like that and not knowing if it was mechanically ok.
I will have to see what they offer me.
It was a great car but I don't feel the same about it after seeing it in that state today
Actually I don't know what to do.
 
That's awful , I'd be gutted to lose one of my beloved Landies. Will send pics to my son who's a Landy nut and lives in the area it was found - just in case.
Hope you get something sorted, but if you know it to be a good sound one it might be worth keeping and restoring with the insurance money.

last year some scumbags broke into our house stole our thing then took my dads car as well. It was recovered a few weeks later with false plates on and we were told it had been too long and any forensic (sp) evidence would have gone so we were free to just pick the car up. My dad got new plates made and we went to pick it up. Found they had put false plates over top of origionals with plastic bands! Dad then went to drive it out of the garage and the back wheels were pointing in! Then while waiting for the aa recovery vehicle we cleared it out to find various tools and a piece of paper with a guys name and telephone number on it! Police hadn't picked up any of this and my dad was fuming. They eventually arrested somebody who confessed to the robbery but couldn't prosecute him, I think the said it was something to do with constable to do with the case was on maternity leave! Anyhu dad gets car fixed by insurance but when you get it back it doesn't feel like your car anymore, it stank of smoke and there was damage to the interior so in the end my dad sold it. I hope you find a new landy you love and hope they catch and prosecute whoever stole it from you!
 
Your insurance company should give the opportuntity to buy back at reduced rate, whilst on phone about your claim ask them how this works for them.
We've brought two vehicles which have be stolen and trashed by tea leafs, we did them up and sold them, as i didn't want to keep. We've also brought back from insurance company vehicles that have been written off due to accident damage and they have defo been done up and sold on. As they were not badly damaged but too expensive for insurance to put back on road.
You'll defo not be out of pocket but it's a total pain in the arse!
