My 5 yr old ex-racehorse whom i have owned for approx 5 months has recently (over the last 3 or 4 weeks) started to sweat on his left shoulder.

I know this sounds strange but when i take his rugs off (lots of different rugs so not rubbing him) he has a sweat patch about the size of a normal roll of salotape (yes i am in the office and its ony thing i can thing of, of that size) about half way up his shoulder :-(

Also when i ride him this is the first place to start sweating.

He does not seem to be in any discomfort, flat work and jumping all good just find it rather odd thats all.

Anyone of you ever seen/heard of this before?

thank you :-)

My mare has something similar, although it is a smaller area (50p size roughly) on her left shoulder. I asked the vet about it and he suggested it was probably nerve damage from an injection at some point in the past which affects the temperature regulation and so causes sweating earlier than any other part of the body. :) He wasn't at all concerned about it and we've never had any bother with it.

Thank you both :-)

Being an ex-racer an injury is probably the most likely cause, i will keep an eye on it but i am sure it wont be too much to worry about.

I wonder if he's had an injury/trauma of some kind there even if no sign of one?
We had a livery who had been hit by a lorry and it had caught his quarter although no visible mark was there although he had a scar from the same accident further towards the front of his quarters. It was always a sweaty patch, even on a cold day and the vet explained it as tissue damage; whether that was right or not I don't know but he carried that patch of sweating until he died ten years later (unrelated!)

There is no obvious signs of any trauma to the shoulder (no scars, no white hair, no nothing) but this morning was only 1 degee and that patch was sweaty and the rest of his was toasty warm but not at all sweaty.

I will keep monitoring it

I had a TB that developed an odd sweaty patch in a paler colour to his main coat too....

It appeared towards the end of one spring - long after he'd stopped wearing a rug. "It" sweated a lot (you can see a line of salt around the left top edge of it) and then it disappeared after a few weeks and never came back again. Looking at it now, I wonder whether he'd got the neckline of his rug caught some months previously and had some bruising or trauma that I never knew about.....

my ex racer does something similar, he gets a patch on his neck from the line of his mane halfway down the width of his neck. I did read somewhere it can be caused by trauma (so nerve damage) and mine has a few white hairs in his mane in the same place. Mine doesnt sweat too much there, its just the first place to start sweating so seems to have a lower threshhold than the rest of him?! :o

I saw this in my friends tb she purchased recently. Again, about the size of a 50p piece, for the first two or three weeks she had him it was always wet with sweat. Since then it cleared up and I hadn't thought anything else of it until today. The hair in it was a slightly lighter colour too. Didn't appear to cause him any sort of discomfort either.
