My old boy (28) has been on box rest for 3 months, and he has been OK with it. He goes out for an hour or two in the morning, and sometimes in the afternoon as well. He's not actually retired, but due to a couple of different injuries this year, he's hardly been ridden. Vet suggested walking 10 mins a day, but he started anticipating the turn-around and leaping around, so I stopped this as don't want his leg to get worse.

2 weeks ago, I got a lovely new horse, and Red, as I imagined he would be, was jealous but seemed OK with it - I make sure he is getting lots of attention, he is always fed first, I always go to him first etc.

The last few days, every time I tack George up, Red puts his ears back, lunges a little at me, and generally looks thoroughly fed up; he's hardly touching his haylage, so I've been giving him soaked hay during the daytime as thought maybe he needed a little bit of a change, but he's eating very little of this too. He is eating up his hard feed though.

A girl at the yard offered to do some Reiki on him today, which offer I gladly accepted, but it doesn't seem to have made much difference; I can't put my finger on it, he just doesn't seem right.

Will speak to vet tomorrow to see if maybe he can go out for longer, but does anyone have any ideas that I can try?

G&T for anyone who managed to get through all that ;)

O bless him. I'm sure he'll adjust to you having George in time. Nitty is a horrible person to be around when she's on box rest. Perhaps more time out will cheer him up a little bit :)

Thanks JT. He's been so good about being on box rest, I feel like he's hardly been out this summer as he had a few weeks box rest in June/July when he got kicked in the face :( he's had a horrible year.

It's just so unlike him to be so grumpy all the time and not to eat. You hear about horses that go downhill once they're retired, and I'm wondering if he thinks that he's now been officially retired so has given up. I do know they don't think logically like that, but they certainly seem to pick up on things.
