I hope that your lad is one of the lucky ones. Well done for taking him on. This lovely lad, my late maxicob, was fooked up with arthritis and other ailments by the age of 6, he had to be PTS age 8 a few months after this pic was taken. I bought him from a reputable dealer at age 5, he had recently been imported from Ireland. He sailed through a 5 stage vetting. He was likely in full work at 3. Young developing joints are not capable of withstanding work.

what a handsome chap TP, so sorry he was PTS so young. He looks just like AA's Ted. I do like black horses with a lot of white.

He's having the rest of the year, the whole of next year and two winters of just being a horse, obviously no shoes, good hay, friends and some good feed over the winter. I'm expecting a different horse by the time he's fully rested! He's really a lovely type and his attitude is just fantastic. Through it all he absolutely loves people still!

That sounds like a good plan - let us know how he gets on!

TP that is very sad indeed. I suspect mine did not start work too young as he wasn't passported and sent over until he was, supposedly, nine, although my vet and others agree that he is probably younger than his passported age. As it doesn't even have a height on it, I suspect it is not gospel.

I have a January born highland. He was an accidental mating of sorts, but I saw photos of him in the snow as a new foal at the time - it really can happen.
Mine was born when it was sub zero with a dusting of snow on the ground. Dec 30th. Another accident, but lucky for me because he's great.

One of mine was driven as a very young horse. The reports from when he was found suggest he was a yearling and had scars all over his back from a poorly-fitting harness.
He's now 16 officially (there's some uncertainty over his age) and has arthritis in the hocks and coffin joints. He's still in work but winding down, and probably will be retired within the next year or so, realistically.
