my yearling lies down alot is this normal?

my yearling cob always lays down at night whether he be in the stable or in the field, is this just because he is a baby and hasn't mastered the art of sleeping standing up or IS THERE SOMETHING WRONG??? i think it might just be me being paranoid because he is healthly, eats well, and is fit as when he not out running round the field i walk and trot him on the road. can anyone give me any advice please. thank you
 
Don't panic, perfectly normal! My four-year-old is, and always has been, one of the laziest animals on four legs!

Our yearling spends a lots of time asleep. At least twice that of the adults. My 4yr old doesn't sleep as much now but used to curl up for a nap all the time as a baby.
 
Going by the stable stains on my 13 year old last winter, he lay down every night. He and is mate lay down and had a short snooze in the field while I was poo picking the other day as well. I always thought horses only stopped lying down at all when they get too stiff to do so? And yes, the babies and youngsters seem to spend a lot of time lying down. My neighbours youngsters are often all flat out in their field when I arrive in the morning with only the old mare standing guard (she is 30).
 
Dont worry, when i got my boy as a baby he lay down all the time. I would take him in of an evening, he would eat his supper and then literally imediately lie down and snooze. Quite often my yo said she had to walk up the field just to check he was just sleeping lol. He also neighs in his sleep :) x
 
Quite normal, think of an infant human. They spend life sleeping, eating, sleeping, poohing and screaming and sleeping once again lol! Aren't you glad you've got an equine baby? All mine sleep in their stables at night from 2 - 17 years old, I have a CCTV in every box and check on them when I go bye byes and most are flat out!!
 
Yes! Our little chap used to sleep lots but now he is rising 3 he is less sleepy. However if you go to our yard anyday around 11am he will be having his regular snooze:) He lays down at night too even though he lives out. He laid in the snow the ice the rain the mud - he doesn't care! He will also sleep in a stable :)
 
One of my mini youngsters used to have an afternoon nap under a tree in the paddock every day. I had the RSPCA round as someone walking by on the footpath reported a dead pony laying in the field for a week!!!
 
My horse always lies down, always has done. No sooner do I put him in the stable or I hear a lot of groaning and a thud and he's away with the fairies! Makes noises in his sleep and snores too!! I wouldn't mind if he was a baby but he turned 20 today ( Happy Birthday old boy XXX), and he's done it in all the 13 years I've had him. In the field he can look like a dead horse, completely flat out, quite embarrasing really ! Am I discribing the trusty 14.2 family plod? ( nothing wrong with a 14.2 trusty family plod I hasten to add!).
Not quite. 16.1hh of pure thoroughbred, he obviously knows how to pace himself :-)
 
It's very tiring work growing up! I got mine last year aged 15mths and he would lie flat out a lot. He still likes a good snooze. I mean, there;s so much to learn as a baby, it's very hard! lol
 
I never saw my old boy lie for a sleep, ever, so when Levi came and I saw h spread out panic stepped in.

However I mow know he has a nap at. 11am 2pm and then a big sleep at night.

Don't worry enjoy him looking chilled and relaxed
 
Jokadoka...snap my 17yo 16.1 tb loves to sleep flat out in her field! And loves a good cuddle lying in the straw when she is in in the winter!! All the youngsters at my yard sleep lots, even the 5 yo's!
 
haha yes well i have the human ones too in the form of an 11 month old and a 3 and half year old but the never seem to sleep not even at night haha. i must be mad but i love it

Mine likes a good cuddle in the straw in winter too!!!
Just been out for a ride on him and thought I'd leave him in the stable for a bit with some hay, but the familiar groaning and thud happened and yet again he's away with the fairies....What a life!
