on our yard my youngster is in with 6 other horses and the majority of them have all had gunky eyes, i thought i was quite lucky coz mine hadnt got it but last night i went down and his eyes are now gunking up....whats the best thing to use??

Could it be from the flies? If so, invest in a fly mask or fringe :)

I just use a baby wipe to wipe the gunk if mine comes in with eyes like that, and then chuck a mask on. Prob not accurate but works for us!

The flys are horrendous this year so first thing I would suggest is put them in fly masks. Off the counter eye washes from the chemist may well do the job but don't mention you are buying for a horse! I've used wet tea bags in the passed & that's done the trick also. If it persists then seek the advice of a vet.

Ditto Cobrastyle, I think it's the flies, my mares are really weepy. Even with a fly mask on. If it's gunk though I would phone the vets and have a chat then call out if needed.

It is caused by the flies or wind, or in some cases a reaction to heat. Just wipe it away, certainly no need to call a vet unless there is a vast amount of discharge or it is yellow/green, or the horse seems worried by it. A small dab of vaseline will stop the wet running down the face and burning the hair. If you decide to use a fly fringe/mask please make sure that you use a fieldsafe headcollar, or you could find yourself with a much worse problem.

My mare came in with a horrible weepy eye last night, I'd had her in a fly mask that came free with a fly rug and wonder whether its not very good! I washed her eyes with water and she seemed a lot better this morning, a little bit of gunky in the corner but no where near as bad as it was last night! I can't find her normal, decent fly masks or fly fringe, so they must be in one of the fields somewhere :s. So annoying! I hope your babies ok soon

I've just had vet out for eye infection! Eye was a bit gooey and bloodshot (he is struggling with flies and pollen too) then I guess he rubbed it and got dust in there so the whole lower lid swelled up. I bought him a fly mask but it was a bit too little too late (he is not actually my horse I just ride him) so that and cooled tea bags will soothe it and hopefully avoid an infection arising :-)

Flies are horrid at the moment! Golden Eye from the local chemist is really good at clearing up runny eyes. Its primary use is for mild infection in human eyes but works wonders for my two
