Has anyone had blood tests done with a high ggt level on thier horse. The recent wet summers have caused high mycotoxin levels in hay and feeds. Is your horse a bit of colour? it could be mycotoxin poisoning. This is a massive problem at the moment which most vets don't recognise, what has gone wrong. This can kill your horse, give it some thought.

Most reputable, branded feeds would be screened for moulds, toxins, etc. Cheap unbranded ones probably dont though.
Always worth blood testing an ill horse thoughh

Most feeds are but this has been proved to be a massive problem in hay and straw. My yard has had 12 horses affected. and i know of lots of local cases. Also a yard of 40 horses all with the same problem. As horses wont always show signs of illness until its to late.

The horse will be a bit slower than normal. If it is a fast horse it will be considerably slower, may have breathing problems and look a bit tucked up. The hormones in mares can be affected. Ulcers on the gums, scouring, weightloss, are all some of the syptoms. When blood tests are done they can be anything up to 1,000. GGT. which is a liver emzyme. Normal range is up to about 49.

if the gamma gamma gt is raised that means liver poisioning coz that what my girl had due to rag wort poisioning. so what with the weather being wet what is happening to the feed and hay?

Ragwort poisoning has a permant damaging effect on the liver. the liver cannot heal from this and the horse does not get better. All the cases of mycotoxin poisoning have returned to normal levels when the hay is changed. I changed to a rye grass hay. I have the horses blood tested each time i change the sorce of hay. My straw also tested high in DON or vomitoxin. I always buy the best hay and straw and disguard anything that looks mouldy. Also the pig farm i bought my straw from had loads of pigs born with co -ordination problems due to high levels of DON. Many of my friends have had the same problems, are you sure your horse had ragwort damage. Was this confirmed from a liver biopsy. Did your horse die? I hope not.

yes she did die. yes i was ragwort poisioing from over the years she eat it before she came to me the vets said it was defo ragwort coz all the bloods camo back in there high thousands they said nothing could get them that high bar ragwort so no i did not have a livery biopisy!
