Myler Bit Question

Does anyone have experience with Myler Bits? I'm thinking of trying a Triple Mullen Barrel Eggbutt with hooks or a Comfort Snaffle low port Eggbutt with hooks for show jumping and cross country. I have tried a 3 ring gag snaffle, a jointed pelham and a hanging cheek snaffle, none of which have any affect on him. Tried a twisted copper snaffle and a Waterford snaffle both of which he hated. I ride normally in a Tranz Angle lozenge for dressage but can't get his attention c/c or s/j.

So, was wondering about either of those Mylers, particularly the Eggbutt with hooks. Would love some advice
 
I have a full cheek with hooks, in a comfort snaffle mouthpiece, with a copper roller. My mare goes nicely in it, I think because she has a small mouth and so the thin shaped mouthpiece suits her. As it is not dressage legal and Mylers don't go below 5" I use a pony size loose ring NS lozenge for flatwork now.
I believe the hooks are designed to suspend the mouthpiece at the right angle in the horse's mouth, and the only reason you can get Mylers without them is because they needed to cater for those who wanted dressage legal versions. I think I'm right in saying this is the reason for the hooks, rather than the intention to offer more control? Certainly with mine it doesn't offer me significantly more control jumping than any other snaffle. If you're finding him strong in a pelham and a 3 ring gag then I'm not sure that the hooks would do much, but you could always give it a try and see what happens! If he likes the mouthpiece maybe the Myler combination might be an option?
 
I started out with a correctional port snaffle. my horse loved it, found it much easier to swallow etc.
however it didnt give me enough stopping power in faster situations.
I have now changed him onto a correctional port short shank combination, with the advice of myler.
the bit still feels the same to him in his mouth but has the extra poll, nose and curb pressure. i put sheepkin around the nosepiece to make it less severe.
i am in my 3rd week of it now and so far so good.
 
I ride my mare in a comfort eggbutt snaffle and she really likes it, she's not particularly strong but I don't find it enough when jumping. I tried a pelham which was fine at first but then she went completely behind the bit and I felt it was much too strong. I spoke to someone about the comfort snaffle with hooks and was told that it is still a mild bit but just allows for some poll pressure and it's very popular for event riders who use the comfort snaffle for the dressage but need a little more when jumping so I'm going to try it.

As said before, I'm not sure the snaffle with hooks would help you much if the bits you've already tried don't work.

Perhaps speak to your local stockist of Mylers and see if they have any suggestions.
