I am looking to get a myler low port bit for my horse. He prefers a bit with a slight tongue relief. He is 6 and just starting out on his schooling.

He has quite a high head carriage that he holds naturally without being heavy on the hands. I am wanting to get him the hanging cheek low port myler but was unsure on how much poll pressure this bit will excert.

He can get over excited occasionally and he will put his head down to try to buck, would this bit make him put his head down when I have contact causing him to put his head down more to buck? If so what other style of cheek pieces could I have that will help with preventing bucking and enable him to be comfortable with his bit whilst also working on improving his self carriage?

I have my pony in a Myler comfort snaffle, eggbut cheek pieces with hooks. He is a strong cob, so the hooks give some poll pressure and a little breaks!

He was originally in a three ring gag on the second ring, but goes much better in this, plus because the sides move independently, he bends better too.

I like the fact that the mouth pieces are not thick

are you thinking of the hanging cheek style to help you to get him to lower his head a little?
tbh i think you'd be better starting with a normal comfort snaffle 02 mouthpiece, ideally with full cheeks or eggbutt style, see how he goes in that, and go from there. he needs to learn to go forward and downwards to the contact first, really. the bucking/naughtiness thing is entirely different and he needs to learn not to do that, obviously, but putting his head lower to the contact should have nothing to do with him putting it down to buck!
hope that helps a bit!

Hi Thank you both for the advice.

Kerilli - With the full cheeks would I need the leather cheek pieces to hold the bit up in his mouth or leave it loose? He prefers bits which give tongue release so a low port comfort snaffle is what I was looking at.

I think there is a MB02 on the HHO bit bank so could try that for starter and see how he goes.

Hi

Give these people a call

www.themylerbitbank.co.uk

I found them really helpful when I needed info on the different bits, they really know their stuff and the bit came through in 2 days. They offer a trial period so you can keep trying until you find the one that best suits you but I'd definitely speak to them first.
