I have a myler eggbut comfort snaffle for my WB (who I aim to event this summer), he goes nicely in it but for some reason when I took it off to clean it, the inside of the cheeks have very tiny (3mm) sharp bits on them, I think this occurred during cleaning as OH accidently got some hole filler on it as he washed his hands in the sink!! (Men!!)

The bit now can't be used as it would cut his muzzle. Query is - anyone else had this happen - is there a solution as filing with nail file is not taking the sharpness down?

OR

As I cant afford another of these bits at the moment (£63+) is there a similar - cheaper bit - that would give a similar action??

I had him in a regular french link before and he seemed almost the same as in the myler but I was persuaded to get a myler as the bit bank said the french link can pinch a WB tongue as they are so big and fleshy and I gave in as I am a sucker!!

All help greatfully received?

a metal file (a proper one for metalwork) should do it. a 'rat's tail file' (i have no idea of the real name, that's what my grandad called it!) works well, it's a longish tapering cone shape with a roughened outside so whichever way you move it, it smooths.
must admit i think the 'comfort snaffle' can pinch the tongue at the ends of the barrel though, so it wouldn't be my first choice, although i do have a couple.
if it doesn't smooth out enough (should though!), i'd scour ebay for a 2nd hand KK with middle lozenge, they're lovely bits.

I had a Myler comfort snaffle and it made my horses mouth sore. I went to a talk by Neue Schule about bitting and changed to the Neue Schule Verbindend and she goes really nicely in it and had no problems.

Thanks. Can you advise which KK would be best to look for? I have always been told they are the best but couldnt afford a new one and never thought of a 2nd hand one in case he didnt like it - I have always had loan bits from the bit bank and then brought the ones that suited!!

He has a large fleshy tongue, quite a low port and small lips (if that makes sense) so not a lot of room in his mouth? He tends to be a little fussy in so much as he will not take a true contact at times - he was ridden in his past life (before me) in a loose ring snaffle (no link) for schooling sometimes with draw reins and a two ring gag with grackle for SJ. He is forward SJ and XC but not strong and I have easily gone round a HT in the myler comfort snaffle.

I have a 6inch in him as the loose ring always pinched any smaller - esp when I tried the Neue Schule (sp?) how do the KK measure up and what width would you advise as doing a search on them they vary (18-21mm)?

i've always found the KKs to be absolutely true to size. if he's got a big tongue i'd go for a narrowish mouthpiece, although tbh i don't find a lot of difference between the diameters, but maybe some horses are more reactive about them.
i'd go for this one

i have one like that, very nice bit.
or this
