does anyone use one of these bits?

i currently use a high ported snaffle, but have no breaks across fields.
do you use short or long shank options.

advice or opinions please?
 
Have one, a long shank, used it on an arab. It was the only thing he would listen to out hunting. At home he wore a hackamore.

Brilliant, I padded the noseband with sheepskin though, always used it with double reins, got lots of nasty looks and comments, but oddly enough, no replies to my answer of "You ride the b****r across a mountain after hounds in something else then!"

Like any bit, some it suits, some it doesn't, and as always it is only as harsh as the hands on the end of the reins (thought I'd get that in before someone else did)

Try before you buy though, they aren't the cheapest bit in the world, but in my opinion worth it.

i used to use a short shank combo on my old horse...padded the nosepeice as they can be quite harsh...it worked for me. was a great bit, and if you use it correctly I dont think its that harsh.
 
i've got the short-shank one for my new mare, it's what i tried her in for jumping and the owner said she'd tried many many different bits before finding one that worked.
i've put lots of extra vetrap padding around the nosepiece.
depending on the horse, you can do the noseband up tighter (less leverage, for a younger horse etc) or looser (more leverage, for an established puller)
because they're quite severe (whatever anyone says, they are!) you don't have to use them much, as the horses really respect them. better than hauling away on a snaffle or a big fat pelham, imho.
i hope it's going to be a short-term reschooling solution and that i'll be able to put her in something softer in time.
 
Love mine!! Short shank with the ported comfort snaffle mouthpiece, helps me out loads jumping as she doesn't run along with her head on the floor. Before you all jump on me, yes I know its a short term fix, yes I need to establish my half halt more & keep her more engaged, but thats why we're having lessons!
 
Myler combinations aren't strong bits - it totally depends on which mouthpiece you buy. The one I use (a Triple Barrel) is milder than a 3 ring gag on the big first ring but slightly stronger than a normal snaffle. So be careful which mouthpiece you buy.
