Someone said I should try one of these on Axel as they're good for Arabs and their 'flip top head' problems. Wondered if it would be useful to try re his head tilting?
Which I'm sure is coming from his teeth btw, can't wait to see what the dentist finds.
 
They are fantastic bit - i use one on spooks, but i wouldn't use one to try and mask a problem that you think is stemming from something else!

I am not sure what you mean by arabs and their flip top head thing. Arabs tend to so a head whirl when they are excited - is this what you are referring to?

My opinon of this bit is that it is very strong and should not be used without alot of consideration - i decided to use mine because spooks was pulling like a train in a 3 ring gag for 3 hours on endurance rides and coming back with serious bruising on his mouth as a result

- the myler gives him a 'warning' with the cord before the bit really comes into action. he respects the warning and I can now stop him before we career into the next county!!

If you think this is a dental problem, i would wait and see the result of this first and then investigagte why he is tilting his head, not what can be used to clamp it down!
 
Thanks, and no he doesn't do the twirly thing, he just sticks his head so its horizontal with his ears in my face and so high I can see the top of his nose from on his back lol!! He'll do it in walk, trot and canter and if he's in canter he just pisses off and I can't stop him.

Agree with you re the dental problem, he is coming on thursday so will hold fire until then.

Thanks hon, it was Jackie that suggested it (Melody's owner) she has one too!
 
I didn't find it terribly effective on PF, in fact I noticed a distinct loss of steering! I was convinced she would love it, which is why I got one, but she went a bit 'dead' in the mouth so I went back to her tom thumb. I'd definitely try one on another horse though

There is a perception that combination bits are strong - and they most certainly can be, used harshly. However they are intended to apply pressure at several points, not necessarily strongly, thereby not giving one point of resistance.
 
Myler Combinations are not strong bits at all, it all depends on the mouth piece you buy. If you get one that looks like a snaffle it might be 5% stronger than a snaffle, that is all. If your horse is strong in a pelham unless you go for one of the really ported mouthpieces you'll have even less breaks.

My Mare used to go around with her head in the air and in a standing martingale 100% of the time. In a myler combination she will stretch down and her head only goes up when she is excited.
 
I use 1 for SJ and XC. I just have to be careful to release low towards the bit.

It used to be the only thing that I could hold him in, even in the school! For schooling, we next went to a Neue Schule baucher, and then to a loose ring french link.
