I went on a hen night last night and a friend of mine was there and I was telling her how naughty Bear's been lately, She had exactly the same problem with her horse. They are really fussy about bits. She trialed a Myler Combination bit and he went perfect in it, and he still is a few years on. I know that they are really expensive but does/has anyone used it?
What are you're thoughts on them? I know that they have a website and you can trial them.

Thanks

i personally dont like them! the hide noseband things apply a huge pressure on the nose the the extent that i have seen them leave a dent on the horses nose. they seem to create a flase jump as there is such presure coming from the bit. Please dont shoot me down IMO these are not very nice bits!

My horse went very nicely in one. Another noseband is not needed with them.

Like any bit they are only as severe as the hand on the other end. Personally, I think dutch gags on the 3rd ring with a single jointed mouth piece are so much worse than a combination.

My horse goes well in a myler comfort snaffle & I jump him in a myler combi with the same mouthpiece. I tried out loads of bits for jumping & this is the only one he goes well in. I've prob been using it since April & it's still 'working'.

The front of the noseband has a very hard piece of rawhide on it (looks like that stuff dog chews are made of) & I'm currently having a think about that. It *is* very hard & the bony bit of my horse's nose comes up in a lump from it. Am considering padding it but not sure what effect this would have on my brakes.

Get one from a bit bank first in case your horse doesn't like it as they're about £90 to £95.

Thanks for the opinions guys, I wont shoot you down Buster lol! I asked for opinions. All horses are different, and I agree that a bit is as harsh or as soft as you make it.

Do I just do a google search for the bit bank?
Its worth a try, he's being a pain in the butt with everything, and Im worried about hunting him in the pelham with no breaks!

some horses love them, some hate them. i jump James in one, he hated anything strong (didn't go a yard in a waterford, it totally took him mind off the jumping) but was too strong in a snaffle. in the 02 mouthpiece combi, he's perfect. it's not that strong, it acts on lots of different parts of the head and mouth at once, not as sharp on the bars as a pelham for e.g. it's a case of trial and error really. i always put a thick sheepskin noseband cover over the hide piece on the noseband, fwiw.

As with every bit that's a little different some love ema nd some hate them. I use one and my girl goes well in it, she's an Arab with super fine skin and I have never once seen a mark from using it but I have quite quiet hands and when she kicks off I don't yank and haul on the bit (which I imagine would casue marking) but keep a constant pressure that she can either leap into or move off of. Give it a go

hope it helps with the naughtness.

There is a post on these in the competion section. I have used a short shank combination for jumping for a while now and it's fantastic for what I need but I have to put sheepskin round the rawhide as it marks his nose othewise.

When I done a google search on them HHO was there and I have just read the whole thread lol!
I thought about trying a hackamore but then went off the idea after someone said some horses can be hard to get going in a bit again, and I don't want that!

I think I'll trial one and give it a go, I showed it to OH and phew... He didn't have a heart attack at the price!!!

I've only had my Myler combi since Monday and so far he's been ok in it, his flat work is very good and he hasn't been leaning on my hands which means i can be softer and don't feel like i'm haluing on his mouth all the time, which is a good thing! His jumping is still a little fast but the way he jumps is more to do with the way he's been jumped in the past so am trying to correct incorrect training as such! My horse has always been very fussy with bits and throws a hissy fit if it's too strong, he's now in the 02 mouth piece combi. Give it a go, if it dosen't work you know you've given it a shot! Good luck! x

Did you know you can mould the noseband to the shape of your horse's face by putting it in hot water and moulding it with your fingers.

This didnt work for me. It has moulded to the shape but is very hard still. He is a grey and a bit of a ponce so he does mark easily but if he is being very strong like he can be then it will make a lttle dent in his nose which I hate, hence the sheepskin which stops that and I do stll have enough brakes.

Wrapping vetrap round the rawhide works realy really well and stops it from marking. I have ridden a couple of horses in them, an dalthough they go well in them, I have yet to find a horse that goes well in exclusively those. Both horses I ride regularly who had one go just aswell in comfort snaffles or Neue Schule snaffles with good schooling.
