I woke this morning to find one of the mares very lame, not putting any weight on her left hind and even holding it up. By the time we'd reached the stables she was walking considerably better. She seems to be tracking up ok but as her heel touches the ground she limps. There is no heat or swelling, no wound and she doesn't respond to it being touched. She also seems sounder at a trot than at a walk. Her lameness is much more exaggerated when she is turned on a tight circle. She was ridden on the beach yesterday, just a gentle walk, and was perfectly sound.
Last week, whilst we were away, she had apparently been lame to the point where she lay down but had improved throughout the day and by the time the vet arrived, was a little footsore and he thought it might be a bruised sole. When we arrived home she was 100 percent sound. We had assumed that the woman looking after the horses had exaggerated.
She is six years old and is currently nursing her second foal. She has hardly ever been ridden and has no history of previous injuries. Any ideas as to what it might be? I'm really confused.
