I have a big field and a small field, and have had them for three years now. The three horses have had lots of time in both fields over the years. This year they've been in the big field for most of the summer but last week I moved them into the little field to start on the grass in there. The morning after they moved, one of them had scrapes on his nose. I put Sudocrem on. Over the next few days he seemed to have rubbed the top off the scrapes every night and small patches of hair started to fall off one side of his face. I put more Sudocrem on and anthistamine cream. The problem continued all week, so a couple of days ago I moved them all back into the big field. It immediately all started to heal up.
Neither of the other horses have any symptoms. We've walked the small field carefully and the only difference is that there are a small number of rosebay willowherb plants that seem undisturbed - have never heard of them being a problem for horses before. There are a couple of places where he's obviously rubbed - left Sudocrem as evidence - but there are similar rubbing areas available in the big field. The bits that have the scrapes don't seem itchy.
I'm totally baffled and now paranoid about putting him back into the small field - any ideas??
