mysterious swellings?

does anyone have any ideas on what couldve caused this?

i saw my WB mare yesterday morning - her hind legs were very swollen form hock down, her fronts were slightly swollen from knee down. put it down to her stood asleep for too long so woke her up and ushered her away for a walk. went home and went back after a couple of hours.She is very bright and not lame or in pain. still no better so put her some magentic boots on. Called my friend to discuss this as its slightly out of the usual for her. We have come to the decision that she has eaten something.
So went home, went back a couple of hours later. fronts had gone down completely but hinds not followed suit, but slightly less. Brought her in, and washed her legs down. cleaned them up and gave her some anti-inflamatories.
Left her over night in a different paddock in case she has eaten something.

Gone to see her this morning and her front legs are fine but her hinds are still puffy but she has 2 massive swellings on her face - 1 each side on her cheek/jowel, about the size of your hand spread open and about 1/2"-1" thick.

so ive called the vet, he isnt worried about her as she is not lame and is very bright in herself, has told me to give her some danilon and fetch her up to the vets in the morning.

so what could it be that has triggered this? the only thing i could think is i gave her some apples off an apple tree we bought the other day - could this be it?

The same thing happened to my mare a couple of weeks ago. I put a thread on the forum and came to the same conclusion as you. We have a thick bramble hedge on one size of the field and I think she has been greedy and stuck her head in. I wouldn't worry my mares legs went back down after a day or two and she was fine.
My gelding often gets "fat face" in the summer. He is very fond of nettles. It will go down as quickly as it came and he has no ill effects, so don't worry.
 
Have you checked her field to make sure there's nothing unusual lurking? Sounds like an allergic reaction to something

thanks for this. The problem is we only moved to our own place nearly 3 weeks ago so its very wierd. the only thing i can find that hasnt been in a field with her is a sloe bush. she has no problem with hawthorne which she loves eating.
im dreading having to go down the bloods routes again as its going to be expensive, but ill pay if it explains whats going wrong with her.
 
i walk my boundaries every day when poo picking and i cant find anything scinister at all.
there are cows next door which she has fallen in love with but i doubt its got anything to do with them?
 
well the garden centre is closed today so im going to ring them to double check as that was my thought this morning.
i spoke with my friend and the first thing she asked was if id had the field sprayed which i had done in May so its definitely nothing to do with that.
