Mystery Lameness............whats wrong with him!!!!

Well my horse was admitted to Poolhouse Equine Hospital on Sunday morning as he has been 7/10th lame for two weeks.

He has been having treatment at home but it was decided that further tests were needed.

Monday he had xrays as well as nerve blocks to various sections of the leg......there is no bone changes to the leg and the pedle bone is not fractured (something that we suspected)

Today they have blocked off the entire foot and the lameness hasnt improved at all, there is no swelling, heat or any obvious signs that would indicate what is making him lame.

My vets are at a loss and have bandaged his leg and put a thick pad on to the bottom of his sole (they took his shoe off the first day of the lameness)

They are going to keep him in for another 5 days on paddock rest at the hospital (he has been on box rest since arriving) and will see how he goes.

Im stressed as 1) not having him here is killing me and 2) i just want to know whats wrong with him.

Has anyone else ever gone through a mystery lameness?

Has he trapped a nerve in his back?

my yo horse has a bad pelvis and is lame behind - the back person said that work is the only thing that will help it


have the vets looked at his pelvis?

Its his front leg thats the problem so couldnt really see the pelvis causing it.

I will speak to them re: trapped nerve tomorrow.

Im just so upset about it all, he means so much to me and leaving him at the vets was awfull.

I just want him home and well.

have they nerve blocked any higher that the foot? my horse went lame n they nerve blocked up to as far as they could (bit by bit it took two days) think it was knee then xrayed his elbow as was only place left with shoulder! they found a bone chip ...though i'm not saying it is that just would be good if they nerve block more good luck hope they find out soon x

To be honest i think that have only nerve blocked below the knee but i will deffinately mention this to them.

At the moment i just dont know what to think.

I had a horse years ago that was lame in front, in the end was thought to be arthritis in his neck, though this was never confirmed as this was before the days of scintigraphy. He was only about 1/5th lame though . Scintigraphy might be worth considering?

I know you will be missing your horse but he is at the best place at the minute & they will find out what is causing the problem. Gil is acknowledged as one of the best equine vets in the area & if anyone can sort out what the problem is it will be him. Good Luck

Thanks everyone, i trust Gil as he has been there for me and Indi from the beginging and has seen us through some bad times.

Its just horrible not knowing whats causing this.
