Brushed B round by his girth and he put his leg forward which I didn't think much of. Put saddle on, did girth up loose and he quite literally grew a hand through arching his back as the girth was done up.

Saddle off and on palpation he seemed sore to touch all round girth area, infront of it and slightly behind it. Whole area in armpits etc seemed sore and possibly more wrinkly than usual. There didn't seem to be much sign of a rash but it seemed a bit swollen and certainly hot to touch. Cold hosed him in the area for 20 minutes and if anything it seemed hotter afterwards, steam coming off the area when wet and got to touch.

Trotted up when problem first noticed and he seemed short on left fore. Trotted him up an hour later and he just seemed sore and uncomfortable in front on both (presumably from whatever is causing the heat/swelling in his armpit/girth area)

Answers on a postcard? I've given him two danilon and plan to go back later to check on him. Was going to call the vet but spoke to owner and she said he is often sensitive to things like flies though this hasn't happened before and to see how he is tomorrow.

Just seems very strange. He did 2.5 hour hack yesterday and was fab. Can't say if he was sore this morning as I didn't turn him out a friend did, but it's not something I would have really noticed without tacking up anyway! Was tempted to sudocrem the area or aloe Vera gel but not sure whether that will do more harm than good if it's something skin related. thinking of giving him some antihistamines when I go back later tonight?

He's eating, drinking, chirpy.

Horses eh!

Are you sure you haven't done his girth up too tight? Can be easily done, especially if you went on a long hack, and he is sensitive.

If there is no heat or swelling in his front legs I would put something like aloe vera gel on the area and either change girths or put gamgee under his current girth for a bit.

Nope definitely not too tight. It's definitely a good reason to invest in some le meiux ;) though certainly won't be riding until it's cleared up, whatever it is.
