My mare (who is retired due to injury) came in yesterday very lame on her hind, turns out she has a small 2p sized swelling on the side of her hock. She wont be stabled so i left her out, this morning the lameness wasn't as bad and was bearing weight on it but still noticeably lame in walk, the swelling is still there and has a bit of heat in it.
I kept her out again, she is fine in herself and will check again tomorrow. I know the vet will probably say bute and box rest which i know will be impossible! will give the vet a call tomorrow if still the same.
I have no idea how she has done this, all i know is that she was looning around the field beforehand so she must have fallen. Bit of a strange place though? anyone has anything similar?

mine came in with a swelling like this on his hock yesterday. Luckily no heat, pain or lameness. The vet came to do teeth and had a look at it and said just to keep an eye on it, cold hosing and he has been on 4 day course of bute for both the hock and a small ulcer. Seems much better today and obviously isn't that bothered as he was careering around today. x

thoroughpin - it certainly looks like it, with the fluid filled swellings (look like wind galls but on the side of the hock), but there is heat and lameness? and they appeared rather suddenly?

It sounds like it. Any heat or swelling I'd always cold hose several times a day. Any swelling explains heat & lameness.
