My mare has recently been in season she's always a bit stroppy when in season but nothing like now! She is obviously very sore under her tummy she kicks out when you touch her there even gently, I rode her the other day before I realised she was sore, she wouldn't go forward, every time I asked her with my leg she bucked every single step it was obvious that she was in pain and not being naughty as she usually loves work.

I got the vet out to have a look at her she scanned her ovaries and took bloods and all came back ok despite the fact that my mare nearly kicked her across the stable when she touched her!
The vet has said she thinks it's hormonal and put her on Regumate but it seems bizarre that all of a sudden her seasons become that extreme, something definately isn't right.
She doesn't have any cereal feeds, lots of turnout, no stress that I can think of and Adlib hay so it's not management of her routine.

Any ideas?

My mare has been acting out of character the last month too! She is naturally a bit grumpy with other horses and puts her ears back and pulls faces! She has always been the herd leader in the field too! She is very attached to my daughter's pony and they do everything together - ridden, tied up and led from field etc for last two years! However a month ago, she kicked daughters pony as they were being led out of field and then exactly 21 days later kicked her again while they were tied up (2stables apart)! I have worked out it must be season related and have put her on a yeast supplement recommended by my feed supplier so will see whether that helps!

I think the early warm weather may have upset the seasonal cycle for mares somewhat. K has been a little grumpier recently when she's come into season.
