NAF Citronella Tag

YO went out on her coblet (NAF-less) with a pony with a tag on her bridle recently - said coblet's head was covered in flies and pony's was fly free. Defo investing in one for the wee man's bridle.

My 2 friends just got back from a hack tonight and said there were no flies at all on the horses and they both had tags on. They though were bothered by the flies so may be investing in a couple more for themselves. They were very impressed!

I have one fitted each side on his field safe headcollar, seems to work well, the midges stay well away, I do give him a thin smear of fly cream around his ears forehead and sheath, but even with pig oil and sulpher and fly spray it doesn't stop him getting some nasty mozzy bites on his body, I have put his fly sheet on today, his eyes and ears are fine, but he still is getting some nasty lumps under belly and body regardless, the mozzys don't seem to care what I put on him.

I'm using them at the mo and have them permanently tied into my horses' tails but they definately aren't working against midges and they do nothing to deter crab flies ( which is to be expected I guess! ) although they do seem to make them drowsy so easier to kill.

They make work whilst out hacking as the horse is constantly moving but I don't think they're doing much at all whilst my horses are grazing.

In addition I had a wasp actually land on the tag today whilst it was attached to my horses tail

I think I was hoping too much for them to deter the crab flies :-( will still get some I think but will have to put up with the dramatic 'omg a crab fly is on me!!' behaviour!!

They are supposed to last 4 - 6 weeks. Cost about £10 for a bag of 2.

Yes catherine22 nothing deters crab flies does it, but they do seem to be very drowsy & easy to pick off and squash since I've had the tags in. I've tied the tags to the underside of the tails so that maximum fumes are being released where the flies gather.

I am a bit disappointed that my girls are still covered in midges though with the tags in, their tails are full of them which I wouldn't expect. I think they may deter the common house fly but only in a small area localised around the tag because there are loads of flies on my horses eyes/face. I also think the wasp today was actually attracted to the smell, he was buzzing around for ages & then landed on the tag!

I won't buy them again
