I recently used the Naf Deet power gel on my sweet itch pony on some of the bits his rug didn't cover on a midgey evening. It seemed fine at the time but 2-3 days afterwards a thin layer of skin has peeled off from where I used it. He doesn't seem bothered and it's clearing up now but it looks a state so I thought I'd warn others to be careful. Where the hair is thick it was okay but places with little hair like near his sheath have all peeled.

You got off lightly - the Naf Deet fly spray caused blistering on my old horse, leaving raw patches meaning I could not ride as they were under the saddle. I had patch tested appropriately, but it left permanent scarring. I wrote to Naf, who were pretty dismissive and told me no-one else had ever reported any issues to them, which I know isn't true as a friend also emailed them! They very begrudgingly refunded the cost of the fly spray, but their whole attitude about it was abysmal and consequently I have never bought any Naf products since, and won't use them on my horse.

I also used this couple months ago did patch test was fine , Carried on using it had the same, the skin peeling off in a few days, so stop and washed horse fast .

I did a patch test too which was okay but I did it on his shoulder :(
I suppose it is pointless complainng to Naf then.

May try neem oil when I next go shopping.

Don't think you can get it in tack shops, sadly. I buy the pure stuff, which is solid at room temp, but you can either melt it (put bottle in hot water) and use, or melt and pour into a tub, for sponge application. I get pure stuff from Spices of India, but Hyperdrug have it in a carrier oil (however I don't know which oil!).
