I need your help. I have spent over £50 so far on Happy Tummy (charcoal) and Global Herbs Diareeze for my 3 year old filly who has a runny tummy. Neither of these have worked. She is very well in herself, has a good appetite, plenty of energy and a shiny coat. She is up to date with worming but due again in two weeks. But she has a horrible runny bum that I have to sponge down every day and her bed is disgusting due to the squirting. I will get the vet if I can't get it to settle, but want to try something else before I do. She gets diarrhoea on wet grass or haylage. She is on haylage because I have very little storage for hay, but it is dry haylage. She also has Pure feeds easy with extra balancer which contains brewer's yeast. I want to try one of the products in the title, but as they are around £25 each with delivery, I don't want to buy both... yet. So, if anyone has had a similar problem and used any of these products or know of something else which works well, please let me know. Thanks.

Naf Haylage Balancer works for my boy! Can't feed him haylage. Wet/good grass makes him loose too. Try the balancer - it's not expensive. (think it was 18 quid for 1.8 kilos from Mole Valley - lasts quite a while!)

Thanks. I am going to order the protexin quick fix as ihatework recommended and probably the Naf Haylage Balancer for ongoing use. If I can get her to be okay on the haylage, it would make things so much easier for me. I have just spent £2500 on haylage!

I would also recommend the protexin, the NAF product seemed to make one of mine footy which I think others have also found so I stopped using it, try adding some extra brewers yeast once you get her settled that really helped one of mine, not sure there is enough in some of the balancers.

Wagtail did you want me to send you a few days of the baileys digest plus to try? (my youngster normally shows improvement after a day or two) I have a pot in my tackroom and I could put some in the post tommorrow if that would help?

Iv got the same issue with a 6 month old foal, protexin done nothing and I used a lot as the company kept saying " it will work" but never did. She has improved a bit on haylage balancer ( cow pat) so put her on it after trying human Rennies! Same basic ingrediant so could try those first. I gave her quite a few which she ate out my hands as treats and they helped so brought the balancer.

Thanks, Liane. That is really good of you. Will PM you.

I vote for Digest Plus. Mine has gone wonky on Protexin - but the normal gut balancer. I have changed back to Baileys yesterday and he was a bit better this morning. I have used the Baileys before and it is usually good. :)

An update - the Digest Plus seems to have worked it's magic and tonight there is no sign of a bad tummy today. I did also manage to source some hay but he is still on the haylage with about 1/4 of his ration being hay. :)

Liane is kindly sending me a bit of this, so hopefully it will work for my girl too.

HOW MUCH??!!!! Is that a typo?!

Nope. I buy it by the lorry load and it's premium stuff. It's for all the horses on the yard, not just mine. Thankfully my girl has started to improve. Maybe the Diareeze is finally working.

Ha iv just re found this thread to tell you that the diareeze is having an effect on my filly. Didnt have to wash her legs tonight and far far less watery. Fingers xd

My girl's droppings are still loose, but now properly formed. She still gets a dirty wet bum but not so bad.

Just an update. The diareeze which appeared to be working, stopped working after a day and I now think it was just a drier bale of haylage that made the difference. Yesterday she was squirting worse than ever. Thankfully the Baileys digest plus that Liane very generously sent me, arrived in the post yesterday and Taylah had her first dose yesterday tea. Today there is a marked improvement in the consistency of her droppings. So thank you Liane! I will be ordering some digest plus. I tried the protexin quick fix but if anything she was even looser on that. I suppose they are all different. I have also got some Naf Haylage balancer on order which I will try at a later date now.

Hi. I had this problem with my 7 year old gelding for almost a year, i put him back on mollichop (which he was originally on when we got him) just a small amount which made some improvements (have you changed any feed at all? Maybe go back to the beginning), introduced limestone flour into his feed (cant recommend it highly enough for the £5 odd it costs) also changed the hay supplier which has helped massively, looking back i think haylage & then also a rich hay wasnt helping so he's now on a not as good quality hay which Seems to be working great. ive also introduced a new balancer with no side effects what so ever. Were now 5/6 mths clear & its a massive relief. I spent in excess of £700 at the vets for tests & everything came back totally normal i just didnt want to go down the root of scoping as he would stress & certainly wouldnt be happy with being starved. I tried all sorts of gut balancers, tummy feeds you name it & if im honest i saw an improvement for a day or two then back to the scouring. When he was souring i gave him actimel (yes for our gut which you can buy from supermarkets) one a day unless he had a pretty bad episode then i upped it to two a day. But weve had nothing now since the middle of summer & its been a huge relief to say the least & i thought winter would make it a million times worse. Also have you considered if she's teething? This can also upset they're tummy & should stop once they're through, another shetland filly on our yard was going through this & it all boiled down to them nasty peggies which i did say there was a good chance, they upset a babies tummy so why not a horses. You can buy baby teething powders which help with babies tummies but i imagine you'd have to give a good amount more haha. Good luck & i hope your getting somewhere i really feel for the situation as i know exactly how hard it is & i still to this day look straight at his droppings as soon as i get there aswell aswell as if his bottoms dry

Thanks. Yes it is definitely the haylage. I am about to order more haylage but am going to ask if they have any wrapped hay instead. Nothing has worked for my filly, although I have kept her on the haylage balancer and diareeze as it is not quite so runny when she is on those. Roll on spring.
