Does anyone use NAF magic?
*Dulcie is quite sharp for an ID and quite stressy in day-to-day life. She is a real worrier and highly reactive, unlike other horses I've had who do assess before blowing their lids! She can be particularly bad out hacking and although practise makes perfect, her reactions are 'large' for the situation if that makes sense?
*
She isn't dangerous, has a lovely temperament and she is fab to ride (very forward thinking). She loves jumping and us reasonably brave but if she stops, she does shoot backwards like she expects a telling off!

My instructor said I might consider a calmer like NAF magic to see if it helps her to chill out generally and stop being so reactive?

Would love to hear from anyone who has tried it! Thanks guys :-)

Hi My daughter brought some for her rather lively hackney/cob who can get quite tense, (when you dont want him going like a pocket rocket at a dressage comp) it has taken the edge off him and he seem more relaxed and less argumentative. And yes he has had everything checked and yes she is an experienced rider and no hes not ridden in a harsh bit and yes she regularly has lessons from a top class classical trainer. He still has presence, but doesn't feel the need the do the test in under a minute! lol

I have tried several different brands. I think it's a matter of trial and error really, what works for one horse might not work so effectively for another. Basically most of them are magnesium based so any success may depend on your horses magnesium levels, and any deficiency therein.
Any hoo the most successful one I've tried so far is Global Herbs Supercalm. A few weeks ago I thought I'd see how she went without it. After a week without it she became very 'special' indeed , needless to say I was waiting outside the local feed store for them to open up the next day:D

thanks for sharing your experiences. I think I'll get it a go and like you say, trial and error to see what works for her.

One thing i thought though...most require a 'loading' period....if you then switch product as you don't think the one your using is working, and then use another magnesium based supplement, wont that benefit? Because it will already be 'loaded' from the previous supplement and therefore it could just be fluke?! lol Very confusing! Hope that makes sense - it does in my head :)

Have tried it to good effect, but changed to Mag ox which is magnesium, but way cheaper, check out natural horse supplies ..... No i dont work for them but get my mag ox from them

Sounds like Dulcie's keeping you on your toes ;)

Years back we used to use Steadyup... You could definitely tell the difference when we forgot to give it- she was just a bit more chilled, and more able to stop and think rather than just react. This was about 15 years ago though, not sure whether you can still get it. It was a herbal based brown powder that we used to add to feed.

More recently (within the past 5yrs or so) we've also used NAF magic, on a very stroppy and spooky little mare (called Magic! :)) I'm not sure how much difference that made. Possibly made me subconsciously feel marginally safer, which she may have picked up on, but as far as I remember we didn't end up feeling it made enough of a difference to continue long-term. Definitely a "loading period" though. Although I'm sure I remember seeing syringes of paste (not sure of brand) that you can use as and when as a one-off, e.g going to a show, which are presumably faster-acting.

Good luck finding something that works :)

hehe! Hello you!
Yes she is a "keeping you on your toes" sort of girl! But in a good way :)

She wants to know when she is going to get a visit ;)

Ooh, very soon! I've been boring OH with horsey talk for so long, he's almost looking forward to getting us back to the UK so I can find myself a horse to ride and some horsey people to offload onto :D

I find myself on preloved and horsemart far too frequently at the moment!

I'll be knocking on your door this summer- I'd love to see your new beautiful girly and say a big hello to Doll :)

I have been using it for a while now with my very spooky irish draught - it has taken the edge of him and also helps calm him when travelling. He gets 25ml every day and 75ml if travelling.

Thanks merlin... And here I was thinking draughts were meant to be chilled out creatures ;)

Seriously though she is a good girl but just needs something to help her be a bit more rational when something happens!

Thanks for feedback everyone!

P.s MB you know you're welcome anytime! :)

I find the NutriScience AnxiCalm Compete paste brilliant for once off use. My mare can be rather hot and reactive and work herself into a tense ball of, well, tension... I give her one tube of this about half an hour before heading off and it does seem to take the edge off her. She just seems a bit more "look before react" if you get me. Doesn't seem to dull her performance in any negative way either.

I didn't find the daily powder dose of the same did much though... odd. Might try the NAF magic as a daily thing for her based on this thread.

ours is definitely not chilled out. think he must have been badly treated by previous owners but he is a big baby really - just struggles to control his fear. he stills spooks but not to the same degree and now travels well when he didn't before. don't think it is all down to the calmer but think it helps. it's worth trying.

The most easily absorbed is chelated magnesium, and the company/label will tell you this. Other compounds of magnesium like oxides, chlorides, sulphates etc are less well absorbed and also can be badly tolerated with side effects like diarrhoea!
NAF is Mag chloride and oxide. Global Herbs is chelated but also contains potassium which is not good to feed unbalanced. HAP's Relax also contains potassium.
I have been researching what's available too, and am waiting to hear from Kentucky Equine Research as theirs is chelated but unsure of the rest of the contents.
