Last winter my hunter had a couple of 'funny turns' on hunting days, not disimiliar to COPD/ heaves. He only did it on 2 occasions and there was no warning ie snot or coughing. The 2 occasions he did it were just after the snow and ice when he had been stabled for longer periods than normal, so can only assume he struggled to cope with this. Once turned back out he went back to normal and had no further issues.

Therefore this winter I have decided to manage him differently by moving his stable to the front of the yard where he can have 2 windows open 24/7. He will get as much daily turnout as the weather allows, and is already bedded on shavings, fed soaked feed and haylage, and am investigating breathing supplements.

Any experiences of the above or recommendations for other respiration supplements?

Thanks in advance.

My friends cob who I look after too has COPD. We tried Naf Respirator but to be honest we didn't see much on an improvement. She found he better on Winergy Ventilate and I've seen on here people have had good results.

Brilliant stuff, you could try NAF D-tox its cheaper, although the respirator does come in a liquid booster, then you could give the powder long term

I used NAF respirator boost and they offer a money back guarantee if no difference in 48hours! I think it does work - the normal powder respirator didn't make a difference but the boost does. It is quite a bit more expensive, a tad over £20 for a litre, but worth it. I spoke with NAF last year about using long term and they suggested giving a 30ml dose a day instead of 60ml as per the instructions. I now buy it in 5l tubs which last about 5 months at half dosage. I sometimes go back up to 60mls if I'm expecting to do a lot of work/competitions for about 3 or 4 days before and after.

I'd definately recommend it as at the very least worth trying!

Brilliant stuff....we first used it when we all the horses got a bad reaction to Oil Seed Rape pollen due to new fields being seeded with it near us. Found it absolutely amazing....results were instant and so good that me & OH joked we would take it ourselves for our own hayfever. Was the air still very cold when the episodes occured.....we had two horses with no respiratory issues randomly mildly burst when cantering in the cold weather and after clean scopes etc vets put it down to the cold temps and contraction of the blood vessels.

I have just started one of mine on the boost as she has had a cough which didn't completely clear with antibiotics, so fingers crossed.

I used Winergy Ventilate for my horse last winter who started coughing when I used some different hay. Within a few days he was better. It was re commended by a couple of people on HHO

NAF respirator boast, AMAZING, when all else failed this did the job. Does what it says on the packet and I couldn't be happier !
