Nagging YO!

If people were honest and upfront about their yard and their rules before I moved there, it would make life a lot easier. Inevitably, if fields are closed, help is sometimes available and sometimes not, grazing is not as promised, then I am going to run into problems. I go and see a place, yard owner says yes to the questions that I ask, then on some occasions the position totally changes within a couple of months. I don't have unlimited funds to throw at places, I have to be very careful financially, and in return for being a tidy, quiet and reliable livery, I would appreciate the same in return. Clearly that is far too much to ask.

I put up a board above my feed bins and write my week?s shifts out for her. She also has their daily feed list and haynet needs. She said she would put them on my board when I gave them to her, but she hasn?t, so I shall write out some more. I put every tiny detail down, but still it goes wrong as she thinks she knows best. I incurred a vets bill last summer because she was sure the older pony was going blind and wouldn?t stop banging on about it. Vet came out, nothing wrong with eyes. I told her this week that this being in during the day was causing me massive financial strain with the hay and bedding, and that there was nothing on the contract to say we had to do it. Her response was that she wasn?t going to argue and walked away. I do get mine back out as soon as possible, yesterday they were out by 3 as she wasn?t there and it was a lovely day, and today I?m working eves so they are still out at the moment. She also said she was around all the time, but in actual fact she works most days, so yard is left unattended.

If you moved there in May, how did you incur the vet bill last summer via the same YO?

I have met a few people over the years that seem to have problems wherever they go. In those cases, it is generally an issue with that person, rather than all of the yards being that bad.

OP I suggest you look for somewhere new again. If the YO is as you say, then it does not appear she is consistant enough to be trusted to look after your horses the way you wish. I know I could not put up with the goalposts being moved so often.

I kind of know where she is coming from - it's really hard to share your yard and it sounds as though for her, like me, the management is an evolving thing. If I were your YO I would want you to make a time and a place and sit down and run through all the thing she has changed from when you first arrived - those that work for you and those that don't. At the very least she will be on notice that you are far from happy and she is likely to lose your rent too, and she may genuinely forget to factor you in when she is adopting new management. What have you got to lose except a little time - and you might very well get through to her in a way that ranting on a forum won't.

In the days before internet forums I once featured in a H&H article about unreasonable YOs :D The livery in question had been blacklisted by every yard in the area at this point  I can't imagine why .....
