I also hope you get your miracle. For all the joy our horses give us they also break our hearts but we would not have it any other way.

Benji started knuckling over at his fetlock whilst in horsespital with his injury. I was told if they couldn't resolve it then it wasn't looking good. I feel your pain with it. Sorry your news isn't looking more positive. Sending hugs.

Hi all I have unfortunately bad news.
We have fought long and hard and have done all we can for her. We have had 2 vets involved, a hoof specialist and her vet and my farrier and another farrier and also my experienced list of friends, colleagues and old employers who have been there to offer advice and support.
Her leg healed nicely, her hoof stopped weeping and all was looking really good except she still wouldn’t bare weight on her foot. She would walk/ limp on the toe. We noticed thickening in her tendon on her supportive leg and her hoof shape was starting to change very quickly from taking all the weight. Her shoulder on the lame side had started to waste away and we noticed yesterday her hoof had a “shrinking” look to it. After consults with the hoof specialist we believe her hoof may be dying and she could be developing laminitis in the supporting hoof with obvious tendon inflammation.
We have got to the end of the road in treatment options and tomorrow we will be euthanising her. We tried to give her as much time as we could but we need to do what’s best for her and all signs are pointing to no chance of recovery.
For now she is bright enough and eating well and being her sweet self but she could go down with sepsis if we wait another week or so, so we have made plans to say our byes tomorrow.
The hoof specialist is wanting us to donate her front legs from the knees down to be studied, she does some amazing work and we are considering donating to help others who may end up in a similar position. It will also help vets, the farrier and ourselves in understanding the injury. Please don’t judge me on this decision, she has been well loved and if she can help someone else’s 4 legged friend I will be happy to do that.
Thanks for all the support you’ve given, I really was hoping for a great outcome and a miraculous recovery. I actually had a dream last night I went to get her in and she was walking perfect and then I woke up with fingers crossed it was a sign but it wasn’t to be.

I am so sorry you have had such a difficult journey - I've been following from the sidelines as it's way outside anything in my experience.

It's fantastic for your mare that she has someone with her best interests at heart and the strength to call time. I hope you can take comfort in all the good times you've had with her, and that the vet may learn something to help others.

Virtual hugs.

So sorry that you are having to say goodbye, but she is lucky to have an owner like you.

I think it's great that her injury may be able to help develop knowledge to help others in future.

Hugs for tomorrow x

Oh, that is heartbreaking. Thank you for updating us as I did keep wondering what happened. You are totally doing the kindest and right thing, how lucky she has been to have such a great owner. Donating her body to help others is absolutely the correct thing to do, there should be no judgment, she will have moved on to somewhere without pain and other horses will benefit. Just remember the happy times with your girl and keep those in your memory.

Huge hugs for tomorrow. x

So sorry to hear this. It's crazy the things that can lead to their demise sometimes. Sounds like you had a great team on the job. It's very admirable and quite frankly great that you're donating the limbs. I'm sure the learning that can be done from examining them will be very valuable.

Ycbm has just said what I was thinking yes I will judge you . You have been the best owner your girl could want and have done the best for her all the way through and now to the end. I think what you are planning with the donation is also wonderful and could well help another horse.

So very, very sorry for you .

I remember having to face the prospect of losing my boy. He came so close. I am sorry you have lost the battle. Caring, considerate and loving owners do everything they can but sometimes it's an uphill fight.

Take comfort from the fact you have also been brave enough to help others understand how/why these things happen.

I'll be thinking of you tomorrow. For now have a huge virtual hug.

So sorry it wasn't a happy ending but having just read the thread from start to finish I just wanted to say what an amazing owner you are. Your horse is lucky to have someone who cares enough to end her suffering. Take care.

Your dream story has given me a little tear. They know how to hollow us out, emotionally. She's lucky to have an owner like you and I think it's wonderful of you to donate her legs and I would do the same x

I have been following this and am so very sorry things haven't gone well. She has obviously had everything she could possibly have had done for her and your love for her is obvious.
As for donating her front legs - that is a selfless and brave decision. Maybe someone else won't have to go through what you have, and another horse may be saved from suffering.
It is never easy but I hope tomorrow goes smoothly. She was a lucky girl. x

There’s no judging to be done .
This just the terrible back luck you get with horses sometimes .
There will be in time another horse to love .
