Has anyone got experience of the above. Cara has one which is proving difficult to clear, she is on antibiotics for another 10 days. We have been having hassle with this nail since about July.
Advice very welcome please.

The best antibiotic is ceporex/cephalaxine;you can aid healing by twice daily foot soaks in povidine dilute,it is the stuff used for surgical scrubbing up.

Yep, iodine soaks, or warm saline, orr even drawing cream, my daughter had a terrible nail bed infection on her toe for mths, 3 different types of antibiotics and nothing would knock it on the head until I used drawing cream, and hey presto was better in days!! (Magnesium Sulphate) you can get it in the chemist! x

I have never heard of drawing cream. thanks. well they think that is what it is. the nail split in july and had to be cut back under heavy sedation. It seemed to be growing well then split again and had anti biotics, then seemed to be doing not too bad then was looking rubbish again. I want to get it going in the right direction or the nail will have to be removed as it is going on too long.
That was a long time for your daughter to have the infection. The vet did say it could take 6 weeks or more to clear :( It is actually been sore for the past 2 days, think she must have stubbed it on something. poor wee scone.

Absolute b****r to get rid of. Pain relief and either cephalexin or clindamycin usually my antibiotic of choice. Have your vets x-rayed to check if the underlying bone is affected too?

Think it is cephalexin and she is on metacam for the pain and anti inflam. wasn't sore til she stubbed it. not ex rayed but he says if he takes the nail away he will have to take away the tip of the bone too and they will send a portion away to make sure it is nothing else causing it.
They have also ruled out any immune problem as it is always the one nail. they said it could be something as simple as her nails being a bit brittle, prone to flaking wtc, just like in people.

my bitch suffered greatly with this. It turns out to be lupus which is link with hormone levels in the blood, she nearly always gets an episode as her season approaches. She is successfully treated with, evening primrose oil, Nicotinamide, and zinc, this keeps in check and she is fine. It may not be this but it sounds the same.

Good luck
