Is this always stress related?

My JRT does this every night before he settles down. He really pulls and bites at them but not frantiically...he seems very relaxed. He doesn't appear to do this any other time. It just seems to be a ritual..

Does anyone elses dog do this?

My younger dog does sometimes. Not sure why she never seems to be worried about anything and only does it for a few minutes.

my jack russel cross yorkshire terrier does the same thing!!
not every night, but its part of his own general cleaning ritual.
he's not at all stressed, so don't worry about it.
it saves me having to clip them!!!!!!!

it normally can start as stress but then can become habit. if hes doing it so hes hurting himself, look at putting something dog friendly on that tastes horrible to get him out of the habit

It is not always stress related, it's pretty common in dogs, some for boredom, some just don't understand the bizare hard thing on their feet, esp puppies

, some start of by licking or cleanng their feet and lick and chew the nails.

My late Smooth Collie always expected me to keep her paws and claws clean, but my late Norwegian Buhunds and my Finnish Lapphund tries to keep their paws and claws clean themselves. And not stress related in their cases, because they only do/did it when something haven't/hadn't came off when I dried them with the dogtowel.

Must say it would annoy me to bits, needing to hear a dog do that every evening. Definitely ear-plug-warning.

from Sweden.

My girl also chews her nails, one in particular. We aked the vet about it last time we were there and she said that plenty of dogs do it, it's nothing to worry about unless they start drawing blood.

I've never heard of this before, and here was me thinking that Stella had the monopoly on weird behaviour (dancing like John Travolta, being the main one
