Having clipped my mini dachsund's nails successfully for the last 7 years, I have lost my nerve! She is a bit of a wimp anyway and I caught the quick slightly a few months ago. The next time I went to clip she started whimpering before I even squeezed the clippers and I wimped out of the whole thing 🙈. I took her to the groomers instead, she was absolutely fine with them but they took off even less then I do!

They are looking at bit long now so I've just taken the barest sliver off again myself, but I wonder if my clippers are a bit blunt or not the best. I'm hoping a new pair would help. I guess I'll just try to take a tiny bit off every couple of weeks and see if that works better.

Which clippers does everyone use please?

Probably too late, but have you considered grinding instead of clipping. I was using a dremel, but then hubby bought a specific pet nail grinder (professional - not a cheap Temu one!), and I have to say - the difference has been noticeable with my clipper phobic whippets.

Yes, I tried them when she was younger, because I hate nail clipping, and again after I caught her. She absolutely hates the dremel, I did quite a bit with the clicker trying to desensitise her but eventually gave up. She doesn't mind the clippers, so long as it doesn't hurt her! It's me that has the clipping phobia!

Try standing her in the bath for a few minutes first, soaking the nails makes the clipping easier.

Also have a look at trying a scratchboard instead, takes the stress out of nail clipping.

Great suggestions, thank you! I will definitely have a look at a scratchboard. Have you used a specific one you'd recommend?

I've also seen that some people use acrylic nail files. I might give that a go too, I think she'd like a relaxing manicure of an evening 💅😁

You can make them yourself, I think they are pretty simple. Lots of videos on Youtube showing how to train them to use it, including for the back paws.

I always stood my girl in warm water in the bath for a few minutes, then clipped her nails, as it made them much softer. Now a friend who teaches nail maintenance does them for me and they look much better 😂
