is there an easy way? The staff isn't keen on the idea but if OH holds her and she gets a treat after each paw she puts up with it. The lab X on the other hand freaks if she sees the clippers.

We've tryed desensiting her to them by just touching her feet with them an rewarding no recation but even after 3months still no better. it's getting to the point where we had to pin her down to do them as they just don't seem to wear down despite lots of "road work" an it stressed her out so much i don't really want to have to repeat the experiance.

She actually growled at OH (something shes never done before) and with a young daughter whos just crawling and loves the dogs i don't want her to think feet touching is bad.

The vet done them when we first got her but she was just as bad for her as she is for us. She's arround 3 and we got her at approx 11months from a rescue if that makes any diff.

Any ideas much welcome :)

you could try one of these
ive got one simular but the dogs arent v keen

i like using the guilotine clippers as long as the blade is sharp
maybe try when your dog is sleepy and just fiddle with his paws and toes and then with the clippers but not actually clip the nail until he gets used you touching his toes and nail
one of my dogs is very sensitive and take me ages but she getting better

can take time put keep at it..may b put a muzzle on for your safety but again get him to wear without getting his nail cut so he get used this aswel
good luck

aw, our oldie is like that too - he cannot stand it when we clip his nails but he has quite think nails and they seem to grow very quickly these days. My dad holds him and I clip them but he will grumble and pull his feet away but i just keep going really. I think it's the sensation of the 'clip' that he doesn't like as i am damn sure it doesn't hurt! Our other dog couldn't give a monkeys but her nails are a lot finer and easier to cut.

All we do with us is really not pussy foot about him. I KNOW he would not bite though and he is always very pleased with himself when we've finished, he gets giddy, has a good bark at us (think his way of telling us off! Lol) but he always gets a treat afterwards.

I am not sure there is any real way of desensitising them but I can understand your concerns. However, unless she is now really paranoid about her feet I think they're not daft, they know the difference between someone who has clippers in their hands and who doesn't! I just try not too big an issue about ours - ok so he gets a treat afterwards but that's it. i do sometimes just do them on my own but once he's got wise to what I' m doing he's a little swine and pulls his feet away!

I would never do it myself ever again after getting the guilatine type clipper stuck in the claw of my GSD and made it bleed

It's probably the conformation of her foot, if she is kept outside/on concrete and/or gets a lot of roadwork, and they are not being worn down naturally.

I would just pop her to the vets, they may also offer some light sedation and advice on doing it at home next time, you don't want to make a botch job of it and freak her out more.

Hi I have a wahl nail grinder which I use for my old lad. He much prefers it to the traditional guillotine method and I think it is brilliant as it just files the nails down gently and gradually.

Only possible problem might be if yours is very sensitive to noise as they can be a little noisy.

I would get the vet to do them too. She might have had a bad experience with her old owners, or perhaps her paws even hurt her? Worth getting the vet to look I think :)

I would keep on with training her to have her paws touched by you though. Maybe try something like soft cheese / primula for her to lick while you touch her paws, as a reward and distraction in one? Also, you could try looking up how to train her to give a paw as a trick for a reward.

she's quite happy to give her paw it's as soon as you hold it. she's due her jabs in a few weeks so think i'll leave them for now and get the vet to do. might try one of those grinders as it would be usefull to be able to do them at home if poss, even if just to save my purse :D

I use a rechargeable, cordless Dremel......started using it as I inadvertently quicked one dog and he wouldn't let me near again with any clippers. They are brilliant!

The link below gives a VERY detailed guide on how to dremel and suggestions on how to introduce them. It is the introduction that is key.....you need to take your time - probably weeks - as you have negative association to overcome, but it is well worth it. http://homepages.udayton.edu/~jmerenski1/doberdawn/index.html
