Lucky Cow

Fingers crossed for you OP

A mare at my yard got a nail in her frog quite deep, it missed the band my a few mm, she was very lucky and just had a course of antibiotics and was ridden a few days later.

put a wet poltice on it- unless there is clear fluid leaking out.in which case call the vet asap as a dire emergancy.
it IS in the danger area to affect the tendons and pedal bone.the back 1/3 of the foot and in and around the frog is the most dangerous place for a puncture.
did it go in far?is he sound? if it only went in a cm or so and was angled towards the toe its less likely to affect the vital structures in the foot.
my filly got a nail in her foot in the same place a few months ago and it bled.
she was sound as soon as it came out(good sign) and i polticed it for about 9 days (wet poltice for 3 days then dry) and shes fine.
i didnt get her foot cut as i didnt want a bigger hole that would take longer to heal.however her feet are like rock and the nail didnt go in very far so the vet agreed with me on that one.
if he was sound straight away chances are its not affected the bone or digital cushion badly-although it could still have introduced an infection.
he could go lame because of a simple abcess even if he has been sound for a few days.if he is lame i would definately get the vet as aggressive antibiotic treatment is essential if he has an infection.
without an xray with the nail still in the foot its hard to say where its gone, unles the damage is obvious-eg a chipped bone.

Thanks Butterbean I am waiting for phone call at the moment from vet.I have just bought a poultice boot to keep hoof clean and dry as hes going through vet wrap really quickly his shoes are still on.Cant believe his bad luck poor boy.
