Nail in foot, prognosis?

Brood mare - 2 weeks to go til foaling, stands on a large rusty nail. Think 'normal' pencil size. Penetrated next to frog, gone in 2 inches. No xray, but believed to have 'scraped' the navicular bone, and possible coffin joint. Vet been, heavily politiced, and prescribed serious AB's, and a jab of pain killer. Vet claimed that if she wasn't in foal, then he would of had her in and operated, which makes me think not good. Your thoughts?

depends on if it gets infected-but a friend lost her gelding last yr after 2 lots of surgery to clean it all up, the infection got hold and the tendon detached.

its just a case of fingers crossed and keep pumping the AB in

pony on my yard had the nail yanked out of her foot (at least an inch stuck in and standing on it all night) a poultice put on -no vet, no bute ,no AB's ,no problem. just cleaned and squirted iodine into hole every day . shes fine (ok i know extremely lucky) but still they can come right.

My old mare did that last year. Vet wanted to xray and possibly operate to clean up any damage but I said no, just hit it hard with antibiotics and trust to luck, I'm not putting her through surgery at 32. She recovered fine. And I had another one in an in foal mare about 15 years ago - same thing, same outcome.
You could be lucky, by the time you know one way or the other (depending on the degree of lameness) she should have foaled and you can maybe think again?

I've known 2. Frist one I wasn't there for. Vet x rayed with nail still in foot and then sent to hospital (travelled with nail in foot!) Horse had to have several operations and months after still was not sound (was on loan and owner took back)

the 2nd horse I was there for. Vet took nail out of foot and horse walked away sound. Vet poulticed etc and told us to check him after a certain number of hours. If it went infected he would go suddenly lame. Thankfully he never took a lame step and weeks later was back in work.

My horse stood on a hoofpick last year (don't ask ) and went in about 1/2"-1". I pulled it out stuck it in hibiscrub, then poulticed. Vet came out, checked her, lots of ABs, poulticing and iodine spray and she was fine Key is keeping it clean and dry.

We had one go in near frog, vet removed and synovial fluid came out, cue trip to vets to have it flushed, was given 40% success rate to return to work but luckily horse fought it and came back fine.
