My horse has had a nail in the sole she was very lame when it happened had the vet remove it and was in for a week box rest with poutice etc.
She had gone back out in the field now and on trot up is stepping slightly short very mildly with that hind....so should I be doing anything as an aftercare?

Yes called this afternoon but missed her and as it wasn't urgent was going to wait till then was wondering if anyone had this experience and what they did as aftercare? If anything?

My pony had a nail in his hoof just over 6 years ago. He ended up in horsespital for 10 days. It had missed his navicular bursae by 2mm, luckily for him and me else it would have probably been a different outcome. He came home initially after I took him in for investigation, poulticed etc. He suffered with an underrun sole and that's when he ended up being admitted.

He did it in the autumn so ended up spending the whole winter on box rest with a metal plate on a shoe which needed attention daily and flushing out for a number of weeks. He then had a pad fitted to prevent infection as he had quite a hole in his foot.

Hope your mare is ok.

My horse had a nail in his hoof one year ago, was his right hind and he presented as broken leg lame until vet found it and took it out. It was about 3cm deep and in the area between frog and sole. Horse was not right for a month or more, leg always filled a bit. One day, when cleaning his hoof we found a black line, followed it, found pus, then blood. Farrier was out - literally opened his hoof, and it was the worst smell ever, a lot of blood and probably a nasty abscess. We kept the hoof clean and bandaged (although my boy managed to unwrap it during the night somehow), and we washed it with povidone iodine. It took some time to grow his frog back to normal, for a while there was a big piece missing and it was soft and /really/ hot. Important thing is to keep it clean and if the nail got deep, maybe put your horse on some antibiotics to help if there is bacteria trapped inside, it could cause inflammation and pain. And when cleaning her hoof, check for abscess or anything. And keep the shoes off until she regains her previous soundness. We did not put shoes back on just in case they would mask any leftover lameness. But as soon as abscess drained, horse was shoed and back to work in no time, and never took a lame step on that leg after it. Good luck with your girl. Those things happen, and go away, so no worries. <3
