Hi all,
Anyone got any advice regarding a horse with nail prick?
My horse is shod natural balance only on fronts. Horse lost shoe in field, farrier replaced it a WEEK later (I missed a comp), shoe lasted 48 hours and it came off taking hoof wall with it around the nail holes. Another week and farrier could replace shoe. This was fine. A few days later OTHER shoe came off. Farrier came out and replaced both shoes with quarter clips (I usually request these as horse pulls shoes often).
24 hours later horse was lame, pointing etc. Farrier came out and removed shoe on damaged hoof and told me it was caused by quarter clips pinching, OR a misplaced nail due to the hoof having lost too much wall... There are blood lines on the sole of hoof.
I am poulticing, gave horse some bute etc. He is still very sore. I have a hoof boot, I wondered if I can put it over the poultice and turn horse out. As he is on his own in his stable , he can shuffle round his field with his mate if he is ok to go out.
I have the vet coming on friday for a separate matter so he will see the foot at the same time if it's not better by then.
Any ideas/experiences/advice to share? And do I need a new farrier??????

this morning legs have gone right down and horse is back to himself, wanting to go out! pus on poultice so guess he's on the mend... haven't given bute so his system can fight it.

feet are good! this is why i don't understand why he's losing shoes! tho he did have low-grade lami this spring so could that have weakened the hoof?

Suggest giving them a break from shoes long enough for a new hoof capsule to come down 8 months roughly if I remember right. sounds like putting shoes on at this point is going to cause even further, long lasting damage aside from hurting the horse.

Hmm that's maybe a viable option, though he is footy on hard ground on his unshod hinds and needs hoofboots on roads.

he is out 247 in a greenguard with equibites to supplement. at the moment in wth old hay and fastfibre!
