Is it possible to change a horses registered name? Its not quite being changed, but I would like the prefix dropped. The horse has an FEI passport and reg BE and BSJA. If poss, any ideas of the cost?
Thanks
yup, i had Bloss's name changed on her english passport for £15, im not sure how much it is for an FEI passport. I just phoned up the passport agency and asked them. I think thats the best thing for you to do aswell, then they will be able to give you advice on how to do it properly aswell. x
Seriously and simply because a prefix is a marketing brand for that breeder. How else are people to know they are breeding good bad or indifferent stock if the brand name isn't prominent (by way of the commentator) when competing as programmes with breeding details entered are very few and far between. You are being very unfair to the breeder IMHO as you are in effect their shop window by owning one of their horses whether you like the fact or not.
Sorry if you don't like my reply, it is one of my soapbox things, but I'm sure other breeders would also be miffed if a prefix was removed just because it doesn't suit you.
* I say nothing about changing the name if you don't like it as long as you don't change or remove the prefix. Also, correct me if I'm wrong anybody but I understand it that if the prefix is registered with the Central Prefix Register, then a prefix can only be removed by permission of the prefix holder.
I also know someone who has just registered a mare with the BSJA; it has the most awful name on the passport and they have had to keep to that, can't change it at all unless they want to pay a fortune and that hasn't even a prefix! And that is one name I would have changed myself!
no idea about prefixes but i have a bhs passport, they changed jay's name on it as he was jester when i got him,he has his show name with jester in {} behind it as that was the name the passport was issued with, would guess they will not remove the prefix but put it after like mine.
MFH_09 I understand what you mean and this is why for a long time I havent changed her name.
The reason now for the decision to drop the prefix is now I dont think the stud is still operating or breeding, infact apparently they have a new stud name. So now I would like my horse without the prefix as some day we have plans to breed from her (and other mares) and set up our own stud with our own prefix.
I know its gonna be a hassle though... another reason why I havent bothered for so long!
In that case I can understand your reasoning, especially if they are not operating under the same prefix anymore. If it was a dog (bear with me!) the KC would accept an additional prefix but tagged onto the end (suffix) so you could have as an example Topholm Tribute at Maesfen (hope SN doesn't mind!) which gives you a lead to your own prefix if that makes sense.
Probably telling you how to suck eggs, but I do recommend getting your prefix with the CPR for the breed/discipline you are concerned with so you know it can't be 'stolen' from you.
Oooohh! Hope you have a deep pocket! Might just be more feasible to name your first foal with your prefix unless you do as the KC do and just put a suffix instead of changing the whole name (that might be an easier way than removing prefix altogether).
Good luck, let us know how you get on.
Only other way I can think of is to concentrate on the society which will be more use to you which at a guess would be the SHB as they are a breeding scheme and can issue breeding papers (don't think the others do as they're all for older horses).
