My horse is called Leary. I've had her a month and don't like the name. Her passport name is Lady Hollydean Leary. Is it bad luck to change a name. Do horses know their names? She is 15 so would it be cruel to change it??? Honest opinions please??

Horses do know their names but don't usually take long to learn a new one.

Personally I wouldn't change it but then that is how I got stuck with one called Bert!!!

It is supposed to be bad luck if you believe that twoddle....i kept it in fear of the superstition and I don't think it brought us any good lick to be honest!

I've changed the names of both the horses I have owned and I don't think it has ever brought me bad luck! She looks like she needs a much prettier name than Leary - I think Holly would be nice as that isn't changing her name it is adapting another part of it.

If your worried do it un-offically ie she has a new nickname now and i dont use her stable name any more

All our horses have nicknames, stable names and registered names lol

I think it could be worse I know horses called Spagetti, Ladybird, Smelly lol.
I do think you can always try to change her name to something nicer.

Sophie, the name bendy made me laugh!

Mine get called all sorts of different variations of their stable names. Why don't you call her Lea or Ry (pronounced Ri) for instance? Ive only changed one of my horses names from Cocoa??? (eeek!!

) to Barnaby only for his feet to fall to bits a few days later and require all summer off. So now i always keep their names no matter how dreadful they may be...

If your worried about changing it I'd go with Holly or Lady, the horse I used to share was called Porkie, if I was out riding and someone asked her name I always said Poppy!!

I'd agree with the others to use a variation of her name. I wouldn't dare change a name, which is how I've ended up with an Adrian...
