My easiest to keep New Year's Resolution is to lurk less and post more on here. So, here I am ... I have three dogs and no horses (although I plan to start riding again in the spring after a long gap mostly for health reasons) so AAD seemed the best place to start. I have two beagles (but I am normal, I promise) and a cross and live with my husband in Massachusetts. I'm a born and bred (I believe, I've never asked my mum

) Oxfordshire girl though.

So, onto my cross - Willie. What breeds do you see in him? I should say that we have no real idea. He was a stray that we got from a rescue in Boston. We have guesses and of course the breeds that the shelter suggested which may have been half right. He is 65lbs, loves his tennis balls, loves swimming, loves the snow and cold, and is slightly neurotic. We adopted him when he was about 8 months old and he is now almost 6. I'm hoping a pic of Willie will show up below

. I'll post later what two breeds the rescue guessed and what other people have guessed. Of course, he probably has way more than two breeds in there too and of course we don't care what he is

I would guess Willie has some spaniel and some beagle in there somewhere, he has the colouring of the former and the shape and the rudder of the latter

Or perhaps some collie or lab blood?

Oooookay - my guess is:
Lab (check out the tail and the face) x spaniel (for the colouring, with the speckledy legs) x something staffie-like for the extra broad chest and low-slung build....

Whatever, I like him very much indeed

I reckon a collie/lab cross too, from his size/build/colouring etc - but he is lovely

Thank you CaveCanem. The shelter guessed half beagle and many others have said spaniel, collie, and lab too. I can definitely see all in there both in physical appearance and personality. Also, when he is sitting next to my beagles, he does often look like a blown up black and white version of them.
 
Hi digger123. We can definitely see both. Although he isn't a herder, you can see from his stance that he is all about the ball we are about to throw for him

Hello Hopping_Robin! I like the staffie idea too - especially as of course it is a popular breed around here, as well as pitbulls. In fact, his best friend in the shelter was a pitbull that we almost adopted later as she was so sweet. My town has banned them though so we couldn't get her.
 
Hello Gazehound ... good to talk to another Oxonion (ok, I don't know if that is right, but it seems like it might be?). I'm not sure that Mass. is any more exciting than Glos. though, especially in the winter when it is sooo cold.
 
Thank you slinkyunicorn, he is a good, fun dog. Lab is a popular guess with him because of the black head. Also, there are times of the year when he goes a little chocolaty too ...
 
Thanks for the warm welcome and compliments about Willie everyone. The shelter guessed beagle-pointer and most people have guessed all of the other breeds you have. We think he must have some kind of retriever in him because of the ball-swimming obsession. Here he is doing his thing ...

Thank you MurphysMinder. He is a water baby to the point where he will even go wading into the ocean when it is bitter cold if we don't watch him closely. He has also been known to lie in cracked ice puddles and get up from them with icicles on his stomach ...

Hi there and hello from a former Mass girl. ;0) I'm now in warm sunny Scotland (NOT - we've got snow to make a Bostonian proud...)!

Anyway, my first reaction was landseer too! It's the heavy build and the coloring that did it for me...he's a heavy chunky sort that could have been crossed with collie (though not hairy enough methinks) and possible springer etc). Yep, munsterlander but again, maybe not hairy enough? Who knows, but he's a lovely big lump isn't he!
 
Hi there. I'm an ex-pat, too, though I live in NYC.

Your pooch is gorgeous. I would have said Lab/Beagle, as Springers are a rarity in the US, aren't they?

Did you get him from one of the shelters that ships dogs up from the South? It's awful how many hound and hound mixes are abandoned as strays down there.

Hi PucciNPoni - yes, he is a bit of a lump, but lovely with it (if I say so myself). I definitely see the landseer but also wonder if the chunky comes from an American lab because they are so much heftier than the English version.

We've already had some good snow this year and it is snowing right now and has been since yesterday. I think they are saying 9-12 inches by Monday morning. We had about a foot the weekend before Christmas too and a few 2-3 inch flurries as well. I am always so impressed with how well it gets cleared away over here though.

I love NY but don't get there often for as close as it is. The closest I got last year was Newark for a meeting but never made it anywhere other than back to the airport once it was over to catch my flight home.

He isn't from the south but one of my beagles is. She (Bella) was brought up from Virginia by one rescue and given to the breed rescue I got her from. Here she is looking quite un-beagle like that I often wonder if she has something else in her too:

Bella's lovely. From what I've seen, I think there's such a variety among US beagles, especially the ones that come from down South. I know quite a lot of city hounds from down that way; those black and tan coonhounds are ever so pretty, but I'm not sure they're the best choice for a Manhattan apartment
