How did you go about naming this year's foalies?

Our's were quite easy, Hot n Spicy is the Hot from her sire Hotline and Spicy to go with her mum Sweet 16!

Dawn Surprise is beacuse she was! 2 weeks early found galloping around the field testing out her legs! Her home name is Little Miss due to the kids calling her that and it kindof stuck.

As for our livery foal well it is beyond me

Loc's Mr Ickle Pickle. The Loc's bit due to his owner working full time for Loc's horse tranpsort hence the mare going into foal, and i guess pickle due to his colour, but it does suit him!

Didn't have a foal this year. Last year's was by Contendro and we wanted it to begin with the letter C so chose Calista which means beautiful.
Her previous foals all had Play in them because her dam line had names like Fun and Games, Easter Frolic, and Fun Fair etc. So her 1st 3 by Mayhill were called Matchplay, Play it cool ann Play the Joker. The 4th by Weston Justice we called Fair Play but by the 5th were running out of ideas on that theme.

Cool Magick Gizmo came from Cool Diamond sire & Dam is Magic Moments the Gizmo bit was my daughter. Last yr was made up of Prince because there is a Princess in his Dams pedigree, Sabado which is Portugese for Saturday the day he was born, & Gemstar because he is a Gemini & has a Star.

Tried endless number of ideas, combining mare's name (Ballykett Blue Diamond, grandsire King of Diamonds) and Caretino Glory, foal's sire. We were going to go for Fionn mac Cumhail, mythical Irish giant, but didn't think that anyone would know how to say,

and didn't like Enlgish spelling of MacCool, so we kept Fionn as stable name, and eventually went back to one of the original ideas - The Cullinan Diamond - which at least has the "Diamond" and the C of his sire ... the Cullinan Diamond was one of the larget ever mined, so seemed appropriate, as our foalie was BIG. (And his poor mum suffered as a result!)

springfall stud - is that 'D''s mare that you have there as your livery mare?

Takes me ages to pick the right names for our foals. All their names have to be linked to their dams. Normally I use the intial letter, but I had too many with D, so Desert Storm's foals are linked to the weather!

We name all our foals on a theme each year.
2001 we had place names
- Vegas and Ava
2002 we had a cosmic type of theme
- Leo (now Night Sky), Apollo, Cosmic, Aquila, Gemini, Athena (more mythology relating to the cosmos that one), Orion, Aurora and Venus.
2003 we had a gambling theme started as card games but ended up opening to cover casinos etc
- Bellagio, Carousel, Caloochi, Hot Business, Solitaire, Bezique, Canasta, Mirage, Black Jack and Casino de Bornival.
2004 was a weathery type of theme
- Hurricane, Cyclone, Springtime, Summer Breeze, Indian Summer, Fahrenheit, Summertime, Dark Aurora, Starlight amd Sunkist.
2005 was a magical theme with a touch of love
- Quest for Romance, Spellbound, Cosmic II, Dreamcatcher, Charisma, Kinetic and Catch the Romance.
2006 was a Nature theme
- Wild Fire, Lightning Strike, Arctic Ice, Thunder Storm, Tasmanian Devil, Easy Air, Timberwolf, Ocean Rock and Hot Tropics.
This year we were doing a media type theme but are struggling with the last few names so it may be a movie/media theme, with the exception of the Bug baby because we think we should carry on the bug name there.
We also have the theme for the next two years, though which will be first depends on the foals, I always look at the foals first and decide which them when we have about half on the ground. The next two themes though are Mythology and Numbers.

Isabella was so named because of the Palomino connection.

Next year, all being well, as the stallion is called Zeus, names will be along those lines.

How about 'Play Up' (as in 'play up and play the game') - oh, no, wait hang on: if you call it Play Up it might do exactly that and be a real handful!

Sooo - Playtime? Playboy? Play the Game? Playstation? (just kidding), Pun (a pun is a play on words, after all), Playful? Playaway?

Tobago got his name because Arab breeders often use the first initial of the dam's name (Teeba), and his breeder named all her foals after islands in 2004.

Some of the breeders with mares in foal to him are planning to use islands beginning with the dam's first initial... But I'm rather hoping someone will breed a mare to him with a 'sweet' or 'candy' name of some sort, so we can call the baby Toblerone lol!

I named my foal One 2 One, nothing to do with sire or dams names but highly appropriate as stallion has 1 testicle and mare 1 ovary!! I tend to go for meaning in names rather than go for sire/dam names (usually cause I cant think of any good ones with my mix's!)
