Technically this should be in breeding however I 1. Want as many opinions as possible and 2. Think that the people actually buying not breed do not the horses will lurk in here.

First one…. Prefix or no prefix? I do quite like just one word names but on the other hand should I have prefix so everything bred by the stud is obvious?
Secondly I need to name the stud… the farm itself used to be a stud and has the word Fell in it, and used to be a fell pony stud which I am definitely not breeding fell ponies. It also has the word dyke in it which isn’t great for naming.
So ideas please…. I need to passport the foals, we are microchipped and ready to go just need suggestions. They have stable names, Lion king themed for no particular reason!

i wil try to attach more pictures though it’s not letting my upload them.

first foal is a bay filly, by Comfort
Second is a born chestnut, turning grey roan colt by future hepsilon

Just a general comment, if you are going prefix (which could be worth it if you are hoping to expand/become commercial) then it’s worth checking any potential names against the register. Also use a stud book that doesn’t allow name changes!!

yes hoping to be a commercial stud. I have nothing even on potential names, absolutely useless! Looking at getting someone to help me with marketing

So we are going with a prefix then… these foals will both be with AES.
we are in the Lake District, nearest fell is Blake Fell, want to go with something to do with hills/ fells/ mountain but no association with fell ponies and the previous stud which was here.

I may be a bit off track of what you are really looking for, but I used initials from myself and my 2 daughters and came up with the prefix Katanah, when I bred, the boy foals were named after red wine - Merlot and Shiraz and my filly was a white wine - Chardonnay.
When we then purchased horses the grey tb was Absolute (vodka) and the bay was Bailey. It worked for me !!

My initials are very much already copyrighted by a very famous large brand, then if I add middle names there are a suspicious number of K’s in there. I like your idea though.
Also thinking once, if, I come with prefix and think a theme for each year of names or go with a theme from mares name?

I'm not keen on themes from Mare or Stallion names, mainly as my bay (bailey) had the name clearwind and stable name windy and his full brother was whirlwind. I prefer a theme that can be adjusted for boy and girls. Planets - Pluto, jupiter etc or precious gems, diamond, sapphire etc , they all normally end up with a stable name anyway so its really just for registration purposes.

Definitely have a prefix for marketing purposes too. It took me ages to decide on mine. I had a map and list of prefixes already used and struggled!! Eventually I managed to link in the initials of my brand for my forest run stock to a prefix. I don't breed many so I choose a name that combines sire/dam and that's hard enough. Some breeders here use the alphabet.

Our prefix is Mirkwood. All of our youngsters registered names begin with the same letter as their sire or dam depending on gender and all have something to do with the sky.

So boys by Ranger (sire) you have: Rainsong, Rainbow Quest, Rolling Thunder, Remmirath, Retrojet

Dams - Charm had a filly called Callisto. Jinny Spinner had a filly called Song Of The Stars (the joy of a double name means you can pick the letter you want!) Lucy had Lunar Fire.

Many shetland studs follow the letters of the parents so you identify the lineage they come from. The E line, V line, S line etc.

I like Blakefell as a stud name. Rushall horses all used to have the same first letter for one year so a horse born this year name starting letter A, next year B.

Was gonna say use initials but read that you can't but you could use the initials of the name of your property, one of my Arab's was bred at a stud called Round Oak Estate so all the horses have Roe in front of there name, all foals are given a name starting with the same letter that is connected to there Dam.

You could do something similar especially if you don't particularly like the name of the property just use the initials.

Or you could just think up a completely new stud name and use that or use the initials of it, quite a few Arab studs use the initials of the stud name when they name there foals.

I’d definitely go for a theme from each mare if it were me, makes lineage much more straightforward without having to check paperwork (if you’re anything like me and have a dreadful memory ?)

I have a prefix, Caphouse.
I originally wanted Meadowlands after my parents house but that was already taken. We use the prefix Denbylane for our dogs but wanted something different for the ponies
Caphouse is the name of the pit at the Yorkshire mining museum, which we live just behind.
I did start with a for the first foal Alice, but drifted slightly after that ? Benjamin and Duke.
I call my foals after family members ?

You could try Cumbrian dialect for the prefix? Although I suggest not using the number 13 or 15. Mates have a band called Tethera.
